About the Role
As a Mechanical Test Engineer, you’ll hold a critical position within one of the UK’s most vital defence programmes. You’ll ensure submarine systems are tested, calibrated, and commissioned to the highest standards—directly supporting operational readiness and national security.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Supporting the Senior Test Engineer to optimize team performance and resource utilisation
- Applying safety, quality, and environmental policies during all commissioning tasks
- Reviewing engineering documentation and contributing to cross-disciplinary problem-solving
- Collaborating with contractors and internal teams to manage risks and achieve commissioning goals
- Conducting mechanical testing, calibration, and commissioning on submarine systems

This position operates 36 hours per week at HMNB Clyde, Faslane. Shift patterns apply, and includes a 35% shift allowance.
Essential Experience & Qualifications
Experience:
- Proven experience in mechanical commissioning and testing
- Ability to work autonomously and solve complex technical challenges
- Strong understanding of safety and quality standards in engineering environments
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and engaging with stakeholders
- Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence
Qualifications:
- Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship, or
- HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent via relevant experience)
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must achieve and maintain a Security Check (SC) clearance for this role. National security clearance and trade control restrictions may apply based on place of birth, nationality, current/former citizenship, and residency history. More details available here.
