Media Officer – International Development

Location: Teddington, Greater London – Hybrid

Contract: 10-month fixed-term contract

Hours: Part-time, 28 hours per week across four days

Salary: £32,948 per year, based on a full-time equivalent salary of £41,186

Overview

Our client is an international relief and development charity working with local partners to address poverty, respond to humanitarian emergencies and support sustainable development.

They are seeking an experienced Media Officer to secure high-quality media coverage and raise public awareness of global poverty, humanitarian relief and international development issues.

Working as part of the Media team, the successful candidate will identify compelling stories, develop effective media opportunities and build relationships with journalists and other influential stakeholders.

This is an opportunity to use strong public relations and communications skills to increase the visibility and impact of life-changing international work.

The role is offered on a hybrid basis. The successful candidate will be required to attend the organisation’s Teddington office at least one day per week, with the option to work remotely on other days.

Responsibilities

  • Generate positive and high-quality media coverage aligned with the organisation’s strategic priorities.
  • Identify, develop and pitch compelling stories relating to global poverty, humanitarian relief and international development.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with journalists, media outlets and other external contacts.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Media team and wider organisation.
  • Produce press releases, media briefings, statements and other communications materials.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to media enquiries.
  • Support media activity involving senior spokespeople, ambassadors and other high-profile individuals.
  • Brief and prepare spokespeople for interviews and public appearances.
  • Monitor relevant news, media trends and emerging opportunities.
  • Ensure communications are accurate, timely and consistent with organisational messaging.
  • Coordinate multiple media activities, deadlines and stakeholder requirements.
  • Handle sensitive or complex information with sound judgement and discretion.
  • Contribute to an inclusive working environment and uphold the organisation’s safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Support the organisation’s values, mission and ways of working.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience in media relations, public relations or press office work.
  • Strong knowledge of the UK media landscape.
  • Proven ability to generate positive media coverage.
  • Experience writing clear, accurate and engaging media materials.
  • Strong relationship management skills.
  • Experience working with senior stakeholders, spokespeople or high-profile individuals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines.
  • Sound editorial judgement and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a busy communications environment.
  • A proactive approach to identifying stories and media opportunities.
  • Ability to manage sensitive issues professionally and confidentially.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and responsible communications.
  • Alignment with the organisation’s values, mission and established working culture.

Desirable:

  • Experience working within international development, humanitarian relief or the charity sector.

  • Existing relationships with UK journalists or national media outlets.
