Media Officer (6 Month Part-Time Fixed-Term Contract)

Position: Media Officer Department: Fundraising, Comms & Engagement Location: London, Burford or Manchester (Hybrid Working) Compensation: £34,122 – £36,000 / year (plus £3,954 London Weighting if in London – pro rata for part-time) Contract: Part-time, 6-month FTC (14 hours/week, Wed & Thu) Closing Date: 12 July 2026 Interviews: 23 & 24 July 2026


About the Role

Do you have a passion for storytelling, a sharp news sense, and the drive to secure impactful media coverage? If so, the Media Officer role at Blue Cross could be perfect for you!

We’re looking for a proactive, results-driven professional to join our Communications team, playing a key role in raising Blue Cross’ profile as the UK’s leading national pet charity. This exciting opportunity will enable you to deliver meaningful media coverage, enhance brand awareness, and communicate our mission to a wide audience.

You’ll be based in Burford, Manchester or London, with hybrid working available.


Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Media Support: Work with the Head of Media to shape and deliver the media strategy, identifying compelling stories and aligning them with the broader PR, digital, and social media ecosystems.
  • Story Discovery & Development: Scour the organisation for compelling internal and external stories, ensuring health policy campaigns remain dynamic and relevant.
  • News Responsiveness: Proactively monitor and respond to breaking news, welfare issues, and key moments in animal care.
  • Media Enquiries & Crisis Support: Manage media enquiries efficiently, adhering to deadlines, and work on the out-of-hours media rota for quick responses.
  • Reputation Management: Champion Blue Cross’ brand purpose through PR, protect its legacy, and ensure consistent messaging across all channels.
  • Collaborative Partnerships: Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, reporters, and influencers, while working with colleagues across all departments—from fundraising to rehoming centres—to maximise coverage.
  • Media Activities: Organise press visits, media events, and filings to enhance visibility and ensure engaging multimedia content.
  • Representation: Act as a cultural ambassador on charity sector panels as needed.

About You

A passionate and proactive media relations professional, you will bring an independent yet collaborative mindset, excelling in diverse environments.

  • Highly Organised: You’ll thrive under pressure, juggling tight deadlines while keeping relationships honest and creative campaigns engaging.
  • Adaptable: PR should seamlessly connect with digital, campaigns, and social media aspects.
  • Professional Communicator: Able to advise cross-department colleagues on media best practice, build trust with diverse stakeholders, and work smoothly as part of a flexible, issue-driven team.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience

✔ A doorway into the world of media relations, PR, or journalistic profession. ✔ Proven track record of spotting and pursuing breaking news opportunities for national coverage. ✔ Experience crafting and executing creative PR campaigns. ✔ Exceptional writing and communication skills in both print and soft formats. ✔ Strong relationship-building abilities with internal/external teams. ✔ Hands-on experience in managing photo calls and directing filming. ✔ Media spokespeople briefing expertise to effectively align communications strategy. ✔ Leveraging celebrity engagement for press coverage wherever possible. ✔ Integrating social media and digital tactics into PR work, driving engagement.

✔ Able to demonstrate fluency with Blue Cross principles and values.

Desirable Additions: 🔹 Experience in reputation management or crisis communications. 🔹 Experience managing external communications agencies. 🔹 Prior work in Non-profits or animal welfare sector.
