About the Role
Please note this job advert is for our September 2025 intake of Medical Doctor Degree apprentices. Applicants must have attended an MDDA information session in order to apply.

The Medical Doctor Degree Apprenticeship (MDDA) offers an alternative path into medicine for people who might not have otherwise gone to medical school. It will contribute to changing the current doctor demographic to be more representative of our local communities in East Suffolk & North Essex.
As an apprentice you will be employed by ESNEFT and released for academic study to Anglia Ruskin University School of medicine full time. Both elements of the programme are dependent on each other. Loss of employment status or removal from the academic programme will result in removal from the apprenticeship entirely.
Both elements of the programme are situated in the East of England and full time attendance at the academic programme based on the ARU campus in Chelmsford is mandatory, therefore a demonstrable commitment to live and work in the East of England is highly desirable.

Apprenticeship ‘Work Role’
When not attending university, MDDA’s will work in an ESNEFT job role throughout their 5-year programme. There will be a variety of rotational non-clinical roles in secondary and primary care settings that will support the wider development in medical training.
Some may be patient facing and others will look at the supporting systems needed to function as doctors. It will only be required to work in your ‘work role’ when not attending university, which for the first year will be 15 weeks.

- For Students NOT Meeting WAMs Criteria
- 5 GCSEs – Grade 9-6 / A*-B
- (which must include English language, Maths and 2 Sciences)
- 5 GCSEs – Grade 9-6 / A*-B
- For Students Meeting WAMs Entry Criteria
- 2 Science GCSEs – Grade 9-6 / A*-B
- Maths and English GCSE – Grade 9-4 / A*-C
- (Functional skills level 2 acceptable)
- 1 GCSE – Grade 9-6 / A*-B (in any subject)
Following confirmation of GCSEs, applicants must hold one or more of the following qualifications (achieved 2019 and after):

For students NOT meeting WAMs criteria one of the following must have been achieved:
- A levels – A*AA (which include 2 sciences)
- T Level (Health or Healthcare Science)
- Distinction – scoring minimum grade A in ‘core component’ & minimum Merit grade in ‘specialism’
- Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) – minimum score of 30 Distinction & 15 Merit

For Applicants Meeting The WAMS Criteria We Have a Reduced Entry Criteria Of Which One Of The Following Must Have Been Achieved
- A levels – ABB (which include 2 sciences) + meets one or more of the WAMS criteria
- T Level (Health or Healthcare Science)
- Merit – scoring minimum grade B in ‘core component’ and minimum Merit in ‘specialism’ + meets one or more of the WAMS criteria*
- Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) – minimum score of 30 Distinction & 15 Merit
For undergraduate degree applicants one of the following must have been achieved:
- Please note, University graduate places will be capped at 20%, the remaining number will be reserved for pre-degree applicants.
- 2:1 (or above) undergraduate degree in a university approved Science or Allied Health degree, achieved 2019 and after
- 2:1 (or above) undergraduate degree in a non-Science / Allied Health subject (achieved 2019 and after), with either one of the following:
- A Level in either Biology, Chemistry or Physics (B grade or above)
- Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) (30 Distinction & 15 Merit)
