Medical Laboratory Assistant - Microbiology

Medical Laboratory Assistant – Microbiology Department (Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Basingstoke Site)

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Laboratory Assistant within the Microbiology Department at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Basingstoke site).

The role involves processing a range of samples and body fluids, assisting in the diagnosis of disease to contribute to positive patient outcomes. Key responsibilities include:

  • Running laboratory analysers
  • Preparing samples and reagents
  • Conducting quality control
  • Reporting and verifying results
  • Troubleshooting technical issues

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, well-motivated, highly organised, and possess strong interpersonal skills, with a commitment to delivering a high-quality laboratory service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and analyse pathology samples using routine and complex diagnostic procedures
  • Perform laboratory investigations and procedures on a rotational basis as required
  • Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory instruments
  • Prepare quality control materials and collate results
  • Verify that quality control results align with laboratory policy standards
  • Maintain proper sample storage and adhere to timely disposal protocols
  • Manage sample handling (collection, sorting, and logging) on the Laboratory Information System (WinPath)
  • Handle clinical waste in compliance with Health & Safety guidelines

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Background in science subjects to GCSE level
  • Soundtrack experience in computer-based systems
  • Demonstrated typing proficiency
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities

Desirable (but not mandatory) Experience

  • Familiarity with laboratory workflows or diagnostics
  • Experience in a healthcare or science-related environment
