Medical Laboratory Assistant – Specimen Reception

Location: London, HCA Laboratories – Shropshire House

Position Type: Full time, 37.5 hours per week

Shifts: Between 8:00am and 8:30pm, Monday to Friday

Duration: Temporary role until July 2027

Salary: Competitive

We’re looking for a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Central Specimen Reception day team at HCA Laboratories, based in Shropshire House in London. This is a fast-paced, high-volume environment at the centre of our laboratory network, where every sample plays a part in supporting accurate and timely diagnosis.

Working within a central hub gives you exposure to a wide range of tests and laboratory pathways, offering a strong foundation to build your experience and confidence within diagnostic services. You’ll be part of a team that values precision, shared responsibility and consistent support, with structured day shifts that provide stability and balance.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant in Specimen Reception, you’ll be part of a close and collaborative team responsible for managing samples at the earliest and most critical stage of the diagnostic journey. You’ll work closely with laboratory teams, couriers and clinical colleagues to ensure samples are handled safely, processed efficiently and directed to the right departments without delay.

In this role, you’ll build a strong understanding of laboratory systems such as Meditech, while developing practical experience in a high throughput setting. With clear processes and support from experienced colleagues, you’ll grow your technical skills, attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities with confidence.

What you’ll do:

  • Receive, check and accurately book in laboratory samples using Meditech
  • Prioritise and distribute samples to the correct laboratory areas within required timeframes
  • Prepare and package samples for referral to external laboratories
  • Respond to telephone enquiries and liaise with internal teams and external clients
  • Maintain a clean, safe working environment in line with health and safety and infection control procedures

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
