Job Overview
We are looking to recruit a Medical Laboratory Technician in Cellular Pathology. You will support our friendly team to provide the best possible service to patients across the region. Cellular Pathology is a busy department, receiving around 35,000 histopathology and non-gynaecological requests each year and performing over 120,000 tests.
This is an exciting time to join the Cellular Pathology Team; the department is currently validating automation and digital scanning, which will be maintained by the MLT/AP team. This is part of a wide-scale project to digitalise Histopathology across the West Midlands.
Main Duties of the Job
The role primarily involves working within the histopathology section of the laboratory, particularly in the microtomy section of the laboratory. The successful candidate will be working alongside Biomedical Scientists and Pathologists; the ability to work well in a team is of paramount importance. The successful candidate will be required to have good communication and organisational skills and the ability to work under pressure. They will be expected to provide training and support for the MLA team and any other member of staff where appropriate. The candidate should be able to demonstrate a willingness to improve processes within the lab and contribute to the continual improvement of the department.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
