Job Title: Medical Secretary – Histopathology / Cellular Pathology

Banding: Band 4–5 (Depending on Experience)

Location: North East England

Start: ASAP

Duration: Ongoing

Rate: £20-£30

Working Hours: Full-time

We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Medical Secretary to join our client's busy Histopathology / Cellular Pathology Department. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a fast-paced laboratory environment, providing comprehensive administrative and secretarial support to Pathologists, Consultants, and the wider Cellular Pathology team.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring the efficient operation of the department, supporting diagnostic services that are critical to patient care. Candidates with previous experience within Histopathology, Cellular Pathology, or wider Pathology services will be highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will provide a full range of medical secretarial and administrative support to the Histopathology department. Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing consultant diaries and correspondence
  • Audio typing and transcription of clinical reports
  • Processing pathology documentation
  • Maintaining accurate patient records
  • Liaising with clinicians and laboratory staff
  • Ensuring all administrative tasks are completed in accordance with departmental procedures

You will be responsible for handling sensitive patient information, managing enquiries from healthcare professionals, supporting MDT activity where required, and ensuring diagnostic reports are distributed accurately and within agreed timescales.

Experience working within a pathology laboratory environment and familiarity with pathology laboratory information systems such as Omni Lab or Apex would be highly advantageous.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous experience as a Medical Secretary, Histopathology Secretary, Cellular Pathology Secretary, or equivalent NHS administrative role.
  • Experience working within Histopathology, Cellular Pathology, Pathology, or laboratory services.
  • Strong audio typing and medical terminology knowledge.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within a busy healthcare environment.
  • Experience using NHS systems and electronic patient records.
  • Experience with Omni Lab, Apex, or other laboratory information management systems (desirable).
