Consultant in Medical / Clinical Oncology
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Medical / Clinical Oncology to join a research-active oncology service delivering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cancer care in the South West. The service provides radiotherapy and systemic anti-cancer treatment across all major tumour sites and maintains a strong clinical trials portfolio supported by dedicated research infrastructure.
The role offers excellent opportunities for subspecialty development, multidisciplinary collaboration, service innovation, and clinical leadership within a supportive consultant team.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver consultant-led medical and clinical oncology services, including inpatient care, outpatient clinics, radiotherapy, and systemic anti-cancer therapy.
- Manage at least two tumour subspecialty areas, which may include breast, skin, haematological malignancies, gynaecological oncology, colorectal, urology, or lung cancer.
- Participate in multidisciplinary tumour boards, pre-clinic case discussions, and treatment planning meetings.
- Support acute oncology services, including immunotherapy toxicity management and emergency oncology pathways.
- Participate in on-call arrangements as agreed within the job plan.
- Maintain high standards of clinical documentation, patient safety, and professional practice.

Research & Innovation
- Participate actively in clinical trials and research activity, including principal investigator roles where appropriate.
- Support recruitment into local and national studies across radiotherapy and systemic therapy portfolios.
- Contribute to translational research and audit initiatives.
Teaching, Supervision & Development
- Supervise and train junior doctors, clinical fellows, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes.
- Participate in mentoring and professional development initiatives.
Governance, Quality & Service Development
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, risk management, and quality improvement programmes.
- Support service redesign and pathway optimisation initiatives.
- Contribute to the implementation of evidence-based practice and national guidelines.
Leadership & Professional Responsibilities
- Participate in job planning, appraisal, CPD, and revalidation.
- Contribute to service management, committee participation, and strategic development where appropriate.

Qualifications & Registration Essential
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility within 6 months of interview).
- CCT in Medical Oncology or equivalent (or evidence of equivalence for non-UK trained applicants).
Experience & Skills Essential
- Ability to independently manage complex oncology patients within multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience delivering radiotherapy and systemic anti-cancer therapy.
- Understanding of clinical governance, risk management, and oncology safety standards.
- Experience in teaching and supervision across professional groups.
- Evidence of engagement in clinical research and audit activity.
- Strong organisational, leadership, and IT skills.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Experience with electronic prescribing systems.
- Experience leading audit and quality improvement projects.
- Experience recruiting patients into clinical trials.
Additional Requirements Essential
- Ability to travel between clinical sites as required.
- Eligibility to live and work in the UK.
- Ability to meet on-call requirements.
- Full driving licence or equivalent travel capability.
