Job Description Overview

Our focus is to deliver effective outcomes by optimising the performance of both new and existing assets. Our Infrastructure Asset Management Practice is a key component of this, enabling us to ensure customers’ outcomes are realised in the projects we undertake as well as delivering bespoke sector-specific solutions to optimise asset performance. Atkins provides the opportunity to influence some of the most significant infrastructure programmes in the UK as well as develop and implement innovative solutions across the sector.

Our Services Include

Our Infrastructure Asset & Information Management practice delivers data-driven solutions as well as providing asset management, regulatory, and technical advice to a range of clients, both in the UK and internationally. We are looking for an enthusiastic, client and solution-oriented individual to lead and develop our asset performance business with our clients.

  • Asset performance monitoring and benchmarking, including use/development of dashboards and digital tools to drive improved performance.
  • Strategic Planning including development of risk-based decision-making tools and methodologies, and prioritisation.
  • Tactical Planning.
  • Turning Business Plans into reality and delivering outcomes.
  • Assurance and regulatory advice both for UK Water utilities and internationally.
  • Strategic Asset Management advice, including gap analysis and improvement plans against ISO55001/ business process engineering, business plan development.

Purpose of the role

Are you a MEICA professional passionate about improving the reliability, resilience, and performance of water and wastewater assets? In this role, you will help the UK’s leading water companies transform how they operate and maintain their asset base — from treatment works and pumping stations to ICA systems and network infrastructure. You’ll apply your deep technical expertise and frontline operational insight to help clients reduce failures, optimise maintenance, strengthen regulatory performance, and deliver better outcomes for customers and the environment. Working at the intersection of engineering, analytics, and asset strategy, you’ll shape how water companies prepare for PR24/PR29, meet environmental obligations, and support long‑term asset planning. Your role

Strategic Asset & Maintenance Leadership (Water Sector Focus)

  • Develop asset health and maintenance performance frameworks tailored to water/wastewater treatment, networks, and ICA systems.
  • Align strategies to Ofwat expectations, resilience metrics, and company performance commitments.
  • Define criticality, levels of service, and risk‑based interventions consistent with water sector standards and good practice.

Client Advisory & Sector Engagement

  • Act as a trusted advisor to Water and Wastewater leadership teams, providing evidence‑based recommendations on investment, performance improvement, and operational risk.
  • Support clients in preparing for price review submissions, business plans, and regulatory assurance.
  • Build strong relationships with Operations, Maintenance, Asset Strategy, Engineering, and Capital Delivery teams.

Performance Management & Reliability Improvement

  • Develop KPIs and dashboards that reflect water industry needs customer interruption risk, environmental compliance, asset reliability, TOTEX impact, and serviceability.
  • Apply MEICA, reliability engineering, and data analytics to reduce unplanned outages, improve availability, and optimise routine and reactive maintenance.

Innovation, Digital & Continuous Improvement

  • Support the adoption of digital telemetry, condition monitoring, treatment process analytics, and predictive maintenance tools.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance maintenance planning, work execution, OT/ICA reliability, and SCADA integration across treatment and network assets.

Asset Health Matrix Development (Water-Specific Application)

  • Design Asset Health Matrices tailored to treatment process equipment, pumping systems, rotating machinery, ICA, and critical network assets.
  • Integrate operational data, work orders, PPM/CM ratios, compliance history, catchment risk, environmental drivers, and telemetry signals.
  • Support water companies in establishing transparent, defendable health scoring for AMP cycles and regulatory submissions.

Maintenance Data Analytics & Reliability Insights

  • Analyse CMMS/EAM datasets to uncover trends such as rising failure rates, non‑compliance risks, root causes of downtime, and poorly performing asset classes.
  • Use RCA/FMEA approaches to identify recurring MEICA‑based failures across treatment works and networks.
  • Forecast deterioration and recommend optimised PM strategies, spares policies, and refurbishment plans that improve service resilience and reduce TOTEX.

Asset Strategy, Capital Planning & AMP Preparation

  • Develop risk‑based investment plans aligned with environmental compliance, service resilience, and PR24/PR29 outcomes.
  • Support scenario modelling for long‑term asset planning, including climate resilience, growth, ageing infrastructure, and emerging regulatory pressures.
  • Prepare options appraisals and performance‑risk evidence packs suitable for executive review and regulatory scrutiny.

Regulatory Alignment & Assurance (Water Sector)

  • Map maintenance and asset decisions to regulatory frameworks such as Ofwat, the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI), and the Environment Agency.
  • Support ISO 55001 alignment and audit readiness for asset management systems.
  • Embed ALARP‑based decision making for operational and environmental risks.

About you

  • Proven record improving availability, reliability, and performance of water/wastewater assets.
  • Extensive MEICA experience in treatment works, pumping systems, ICA/SCADA, and process‑critical infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of water‑sector regulatory drivers, compliance obligations, and service performance metrics.
  • Skilled in interpreting CMMS/EAM data and leading structured maintenance/RCM processes.
  • Advanced analytical capabilities for identifying failure modes and reliability trends.
  • Confident communicator able to translate complex engineering or analytical insights into clear operational and commercial recommendations.
  • Collaborative approach, working seamlessly with client O&M teams, capital delivery, process engineers, and asset planning functions.
  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Control/Automation, or related MEICA discipline (CEng desirable).
  • Relevant in Water, Wastewater, or similar regulated engineering sectors.
  • IAM Certificate/Diploma advantageous.
  • Flexibility to travel to client sites, treatment works, and regional offices.
