The Role

We are looking for a qualified, time-served engineer with strong multidisciplinary MEICA experience and a high level of health and safety awareness, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors, and external stakeholders, sharing expertise to support safe, resilient, and sustainable asset management across NRW's operational estate.

This role is a specialist technical position within the Operations North East Wales Directorate, supporting the management and maintenance of critical mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control, and automation assets. You will ensure assets operate safely, reliably, and in line with industry standards, delivering both reactive and planned maintenance through asset management systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Issuing and managing work programmes to contractors
  • Monitoring performance
  • Ensuring timely completion of works
  • Reporting on progress
  • Identifying risks
  • Providing strong fault-finding support to resolve equipment issues and minimize disruption

The role involves managing low to moderate risk contracts, ensuring compliance with health and safety, statutory requirements, and value for money. You will also contribute to improvement and capital projects up to £50k, including design input, technical reviews, and project delivery, with a focus on flood risk assets.

You will liaise with electricity network operators, support emergency response through a standby rota, and collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders across Wales. This role suits a qualified, proactive engineer with strong MEICA expertise and a collaborative approach.

Driving is essential to this role as it requires operational site visits at remote locations not serviced by public transport and will sometimes be required to attend out of hours as part of our incident response needs. You must hold a full and current UK driving license.

What You Will Do

  • Manage the reactive and planned maintenance programme of MEICA works through the MEICA computerized maintenance management system and AMX
  • Issue the MEICA work programmes to the MEICA Term Contractor, monitor the progress of the work, and provide routine reports on any work outstanding
  • Identify and resolve equipment faults and respond to emergency incidents
  • Procure goods and services to enable effective delivery of the works programmes
  • Contribute to development of designs and specifications for MEICA works including asset refurbishment projects
  • Participate in the MEICA Standby Rota
  • Be the main point of contact for the Regional electricity network and project manage connections and alterations for Capital projects and departments across NRW
  • Project manage improvements and refurbishment of flood risk critical assets while ensuring there is no disruption to flood risk critical departments
  • Provide MEICA specifications to projects and project manage the MEICA Specific works
  • Bid, tender, and project manage capital projects up to £50k
  • Carry out preliminary design review (PDR) and critical design review (CDR) on projects
  • Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post
  • Be committed to Natural Resources Wales Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy, together with an understanding of how it operates within the responsibilities of the post
  • Be committed to your own development through the effective use of your personal development plan (known as Sgwrs)
  • Required to take part in incident response activities
  • Any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
