Mental Health Law Caseworker

Location

Birmingham, West Midlands (or North Benfleet, near Basildon, Essex)

Contract Details

  • Salary: £27,430–£33,056 (dependent on experience) + excellent benefits
  • Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
  • Contract: 12–15 month fixed-term maternity leave cover

The Role

The Legal Team at St Andrew’s is seeking a Mental Health Law Caseworker to administer complex mental health legislation, ensuring timely, accurate, and comprehensive compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Daily administration of Mental Health Act 1983 and its Code of Practice
  • Scrutinising, rectifying, and validating documents for legal correctness
  • Ensuring adherence to statutory timeframes (e.g., section expiry dates)
  • Coordinating:
    • Hospital Manager reviews
    • First Tier Tribunals
  • Maintaining diary systems, spreadsheets, and records
  • Informing detained patients of their legally protected rights
  • Providing advice to staff and patients as needed
  • Attending face-to-face training in Northampton (initial travel required)

About You

Essential Criteria

  • Strong administration experience in a busy, fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office: Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Excellent organisation, multitasking, and prioritisation skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong communication with:
    • internal/external stakeholders (CQC, Ministry of Justice, solicitors, HM Prisons, tribunals, courts, patients, relatives)
  • Ability to balance deadlines without compromising quality
