St Andrew’s has hospitals in Birmingham and Essex, with its base in Northampton. It delivers inpatient and outpatient services, as well as dedicated care services for adults.
The Role
St Andrew’s Healthcare Legal Team are looking to recruit a Mental Health Law Caseworker. The Caseworker role is to provide administration of the Mental Health Act 1983, the Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, Irish High Court Orders and associated legislation outside of the UK. This must be done in a timely, accurate and comprehensive manner, as guided by the Mental Health Act 1983, Code of Practice and Reference Guide and supported by departmental procedures, hospital policy, and Department of Health Guidelines.

Key Duties Include
- Day to day administration of the Mental Health Act.
- Receipt, scrutiny and rectification of documents to ensure they are legally correct and valid.
- Ensuring that section expiry dates are dealt with within statutory timeframes.
- Co-ordinating Hospital Manager reviews and First Tier Tribunals.
- Ensuring that diary systems and spreadsheets are completed.
- Ensuring that all detained patients are aware of their rights under the Act.
- Giving advice to staff and patients when required.
Some face-to-face training will be undertaken in Northampton so some travel will be required initially.
About You
It is essential that you have previous administration experience and be highly proficient in the use of MS Office (Outlook, Word and Excel). We are looking for someone who enjoys the challenge of working in a busy office environment, multi-tasking throughout the day and can prioritise their work to meet the strict deadlines whilst retaining high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills are essential as you will be liaising with internal and external customers of the service such as the Care Quality Commission, Ministry of Justice, Solicitors, HM Prisons, First Tier Tribunal for Mental Health, Crown and County Courts, Hospital Managers, other Hospitals, patients and their relatives.

Knowledge of RIO, NHS Mail and Criminal Justice Secure Mail would be advantageous, and knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Data Protection Act would also benefit the right individual, although training can be provided.
You will be part of a team covering our regional sites in Birmingham and Essex. Some travel to the other site may be occasionally required.
