About the Role
Position: Community Mental Health Promoter Duration: 35 hours per week Compensation: $24.00 per hour (exact pay adjusted based on experience and regulations)
Role Summary
The United Mental Health Promoters (UMHP) Project supports community outreach, empowerment, and recovery by using evidenced-based practices in engagement, education, and awareness. This role will reduce barriers to mental health care and foster a supportive, connected community through education, workshops, and peer-led initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct community outreach and engagement to raise awareness about mental health, its impact, and pathways to support
- Organise and deliver in-person activities, events, and workshops tailored to target populations
- Recruit and facilitate Community Resiliency Model (CRM) workshops
- Lead COVID-19 recovery, disaster-related trauma support, and other psychoeducational trainings for individuals in distress
- Provide trauma-informed advocacy at individual and community levels
- Facilitate psychoeducational groups addressing community concerns
- Host trauma-informed activities, including art therapy, mindfulness, and healing gardens
- Help establish and sustain community-led peer support groups
- Maintain a supportive, empathetic, and compassionate approach, prioritising trauma-informed care
- Offer one-on-one and group support through various community connections
- Document activities, service plans, and outcomes in an electronic health record (EHR)
- Attend regular staff meetings, DHM-required sessions, and community gatherings

Position Requirements
Minimum Qualification
- High school diploma or GED, along with one year of experience providing psychosocial rehab-related services to homeless and/or disabled populations
Personal and Professional Attributes
- Exhibit sound judgment, sensitivity, discretion, and a non-bias attitude when engaging with diverse populations Lived experience of homelessness, mental health challenges, or substance use issues is highly sought and honoured.
- Must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust with community members, especially those experiencing urgency, urgent needs, or problematic behavioral traits
- Able to navigate and support individuals with complex, interconnected challenges while maintaining empathy
- Must demonstrate cultural sensitivity (e.g., racial, ethnic, or community-specific barriers to care)
- Capacity to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook). Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram) is advantageous.

Knowledge and Skills (Desirable)
- Motivational interviewing and harm reduction principles
- Intimacy with juvenile justice systems, court processes, and foster care systems
Other Conditions
- Work schedule flexibility required, including potential evening or weekend hours; access to an on-call cell phone when necessary.
- Spanish language skills a plus but not required.
- Must possess a valid, Professional Class C California driver’s license, "maintain ownership or lease of a personal vehicle", along with proof of auto insurance. These assets are also required to be covered under MHALA’s liability insurance.
- Annual TB test is mandatory for all employees.
- Comply with all agency policies, which may include future COVID-19 vaccination/booster requirements. Violation of vaccination policies may result in termination.
Pre-Employment Requirements
- Current verification of work history from three recent (7-year) employers.
- Testing and follow-up clearance for drug use prior to employment vague; not mentioned explicitly what type of substance would cause disqualification, if any.
