Job Opportunity: Mental Health Support Worker

At Cygnet Hospital Beckton, we offer secure mental health services for women across four specialist wards:

  • PICU (Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit)
  • Acute admissions
  • Personality disorder services

We’re recruiting for full-time Mental Health Support Workers with a passion for delivering outstanding care.

As part of our dynamic team, you’ll provide crucial support to nursing staff in the admission, assessment, implementation, and discharge of inpatients, with a strong focus on dignity and safety at all times.

Ideal candidates will have previous inpatient mental health experience, preferably in a challenging or acute setting.

Key Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older with at least 18 months remaining on your visa (no Visa sponsorship available).
  • Must complete mandatory training and induction, including restraint training.
  • Required to work 38.5 average hours per week on a rota with 11-hour shifts, covering:
    • Day shifts: 7:30 AM – 8:00 PM
    • Night shifts: 7:30 PM – 8:00 AM
  • Flexibility to cover shift patterns and adapt to ward needs.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • Work as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team to support the implementation of treatments and therapies as per service users’ care plans.
  • Assist and provide support to qualified nurses.
  • Undertake safe observations of patients, sometimes on a 1:1 basis or with other staff.
  • Meet physical and emotional needs in a caring, empathetic manner.
  • Actively contribute to physical and mental wellbeing, including individual or group-based activities.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and positive environment for both patients and staff.
  • Adhere to safeguarding guidelines.
  • Complete training in de-escalation techniques and Personal Manual VIPA (PMVA) to support patients exhibiting violent or aggressive behaviours.

  • Excellent communication skills and strong teamwork.

  • Sensitivity and energy to create a trusting and stimulating environment for patients.
  • A genuine desire to make a real difference in people’s lives.
  • Ability to handle the physical demands of the role flexibly and adapt under pressure.
  • A preference for NVQ Level 2 in a relevant care setting (not essential).
  • Flexibility about shift patterns and potential ward changes.
