Key Responsibilities
As an MEP Assistant Design Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring seamless coordination, design excellence, and compliance across all project stages. Key responsibilities include:
Project Coordination & Integration
- Coordinate MEP and CMS (Corporate Management Services) services across all project phases, ensuring harmonised integration with civil design works.
- Support design teams in reviewing drawings, specifications, and technical submissions to maintain project integrity.
- Participate in MEP coordination meetings, track action items to completion, and resolve technical issues collaboratively with consultants, vendors, and internal teams.

HS2 Track Slab Design & Delivery
- Lead MEP and CMS design for the HS2 (High-Speed 2) track slab (including Resilient in-situ and Standard slab), collaborating with designers, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Monitor project progress, issue regular updates to Project Managers, and ensure adherence to statutory, regulatory, and client requirements.
- Ensure CMS design compliance with client standards, including Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations.
Contractual & Interdisciplinary Coordination
- Manage CMS design delivery for high-speed track contracts under Track Design Lead guidance, including:
- Integration of temporary works and assurance processes.
- Coordination of supply chain and digital deliverables (e.g., BIM, models).
- Alignment with project timelines, cost controls, and client objectives.
- Liaise with the Designer, supply chain partners, client SMEs, and contractors to deliver optimised, compliant designs on schedule.
- Attend weekly meetings (London/Birmingham) and track design forums, providing technical support for issue mitigation.
Commercial & Risk Management
- Support identification of changes, risks, and opportunities, while striving for cost efficiencies.
- Collaborate with commercial, planning, and design teams to optimise track solutions.
- Provide technical input for contract administration and commercial administration.
- Close outliers and unresolved track slab issues within timelines.
- Review monitoring reports and certifications, providing assurance throughout design, construction, and handover phases.
What We’re Looking For
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
- Desirable:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) via Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Institution for Highways Engineers (IHE) qualification.
- Experience in rail track design, modelling, or construction (especially on major infrastructure projects).
- Sound understanding of rail design codes & standards (e.g., British & European rail regulations).
- Familiarity with safety & environmental legislation, including impact mitigation and statutory consultation processes.
- Experience managing third-party relationships, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams.
