Job Title: MEP Assistant Design Engineer

Department: Engineering/Design

Location: London or Birmingham


Key Responsibilities

As a MEP Assistant Design Engineer, you will:

  • Coordinate MEP and CMS (Civil-Mechano-Electrical-Plumbing and Coordination Management Systems) across all project stages, ensuring integration with civil works.
  • Support the design team with:
    • Design development
    • Reviewing drawings, specifications, and technical submissions
  • Contribute to MEP coordination meetings and track actions to resolution.
  • Liaise with:
    • Consultants
    • Subcontractors
    • Internal teams
    • to resolve technical issues
  • Manage and coordinate MEP and CMS design for HS2 track slab (Resilient in situ and/or Standard slab) across:
    • Design and construction technical lifecycle
    • Collaboration with design, construction teams, clients, and stakeholders
  • Monitor progress of MEP works and report regularly to the Project Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Statutory and regulatory requirements
    • Client-specific standards
  • Ensure CMS design compliance with:
    • Appropriate client standards
    • Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations
  • Coordinate CMS design delivery for a high-speed track contract under the guidance of the Track Design Lead:
    • Integration of temporary stages
    • Assurance management
    • Delivery of digital deliverables in line with:
      • Construction programme
      • Project scope
      • Client requirements
  • Coordinate designers and supply chain inputs to achieve efficient, compliant designs.
  • Maintain close liaison with:
    • Clients
    • Designers
    • Supply chain providers
    • Contractors
  • Support progress meetings (design + construction teams, clients) in London/Birmingham.
  • Attend/chair meetings to mitigate track design-related issues across design/construction stages.
  • Technical input for:
    • Change management
    • Risk assessment
    • Identifying efficiencies and cost savings
  • Liaise with:
    • Commercial teams
    • Planning & design delivery teams
    • Commercial administration
  • Close track slab issues in a timely manner within your scope.
  • Review monitoring reports and certificates.
  • Support progressively assured technical delivery through:
    • Design
    • Construction
    • Handover processes

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
  • Experience in railway project design systems integration.
  • Experience with rail track on major construction projects (e.g., design, modelling, or construction support).
  • Basic BIM/3D design and coordination awareness.
  • Knowledge of rail design codes.

Desirable

  • C.Eng (PWAy Institute or ICE) registration.
  • Strong understanding of safety and environmental legislation, including:
    • Impact mitigation strategies
    • Relationships with statutory authorities.
  • Experience in third-party contract management and cross-contractor liaison.
  • Proven team-orientated skills with excellent communication.
  • Organisation and detail-focused enthusiasm for tracking interfaces and actions.
  • Professional and proactive attitude toward:
    • Designers
    • Partners
    • Stakeholders
