The Opportunity

As a MEP Project Lead Engineer within our building engineering team, in particular the transport sector, you will work on some of the most exciting and innovative rail buildings across the region and globally.

The team are currently involved in major projects both local and globally from feasibility stage through to practical completion. Current and recent projects include social infrastructure projects such as HS2 Interchange station, rail depots, and aviation hubs for major transport clients.

You will undertake a lead role in delivering our clients’ requirements. A key element of the role will be to lead and further develop our project delivery within the transport/ rail sector- working on local, national and international rail projects for major Clients such as HS2, TFL, Network Rail and local/regional transport companies- working in collaboration with Arup Transport Group. Your MEP Engineering background in rail projects will come into its own when helping to guide the technical direction of our projects, and when helping members of the MEP team achieve their full potential.

Day-to-day, we work in project groups, supported by geographical discipline teams. Our global business and skills networks provide us with the ability to develop as individuals based on projects and research conducted around the world.

As the technical leader and member of the project team you should have excellent communication skills, allowing you to maintain relationships with your client, your team and the wider Arup. You will communicate progress, potential issues and risks to inform and propose mitigation to your client, the Project Manager and internally. You will support the Project Manager to control budgets for projects, key milestones and targets including time, cost, quality and safety to ensure that objectives are achieved in line with programme plans.

Key Responsibilities You Will Hold When Undertaking This Role

  • Lead Arup multi-disciplinary design teams from project inception through to completion
  • Lead MEP design production using major rail standards, which includes HS2, Transport for London, Network Rail, Crossrail and other rail standards
  • Lead MEP design assurance processes, in compliance with HS2, Transport for London, Network Rail, CrossRail and other rail processes
  • The ability to take on Electrical Technical Advisor role on project (electrical engineering background) will be a preference
  • Working with our internal team and across Arup groups, including our Transport group, to deliver holistic design solutions
  • Managing the project design programme and resources, working collaboratively with our rail programmer as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Support our Transport Lead in major bids and business development, and in shaping our skills and resources in rail sector within our group and across the wider Arup
  • Keeping up to date with current legislation and regulations
  • Working with the Project Director to ensure commercial success

Is this role right for you?

In your role in the Group, you will be working alongside colleagues from all over Arup providing the full range of multi-disciplinary services required to deliver major projects. With experience in MEP design you will have the self-assurance to lead your discipline as well as the ability to take on lead roles on projects, including sub-consultants.

We Are Seeking Candidates Who

  • Are a Chartered Mechanical or Electrical Engineer with a strong MEP multidisciplinary engineering design knowledge. Electrical engineering background will be a preference.
  • Proven experience in managing and delivering multi-disciplinary transports (rail) design projects within a consultancy environment; values quality and enjoys delivering.
  • Proven experience in leading and delivering MEP design using major rail standards, which includes HS2, Transport for London, Network Rail, CrossRail and other rail standards
  • Have strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with clients.
  • You should have strong client facing skills and be able to represent Arup externally. You will be able to direct and deliver bids to secure new work.
  • Experience in directing teams of engineers throughout all stages of design and construction
  • Represented the design and/or discipline team in discussions with the client and contractor
