Location: RG30 3RR (between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking)
Due to the classified nature of the work, this role is predominantly onsite at AWE Burghfield. Limited opportunities for remote work are available.
Salary
£30,750 - £58,920 per annum (depending on qualifications, experience, and suitability).
Working Pattern
AWE operates a 9-day fortnight, with one Friday off every second week. Flexible working arrangements may be considered based on individual preferences—please specify your preferred pattern in your application.
About the Role
At AWE, we don’t just offer a job—we provide an opportunity to contribute to keeping the nation safe. Our groundbreaking team is seeking a Dimensional Inspection Engineer specialising in assessing the accuracy of nuclear weapon components.
As part of your role in our dynamic, friendly team, you’ll lead the development of precision inspection processes to certify the quality of high-precision industrial products.
Your Responsibilities
- Collaborate with product development teams to devise and optimise metrology methods for product verification (including accuracy measurement and certification).
- Select and evaluate measuring technologies to determine the most effective inspection methods.
- Design and implement dimensional inspection workflows and set up CMM (Tactile/Optical) to measure aide product evaluations.
- Kleinsmith and conduct quality inspection in the workshop, setting up components/assemblies and applying quality assurance standards.
- Provide a basic understanding of metrology fundamentals, including uncertainty analysis.
- Interpret engineering drawings (GD&T) and technical specifications to ensure adherence to project requirements.

Who We’d Like You To Be
Essential Qualifications/Experience
- Strong background in precision manufacturing/engineering, particularly automation/metrology equipment.
- Ability to programme CMM software (e.g. Quindo, PC-DMIS) or experience with tactile/optical metrology.
- Hands-on experience in manual measurement techniques based on first-principles.
- Workshop-level aptitude for widely used inspection methods, including:
- Measurement system analysis (MSA) methodologies
- Process control tools for precision and precision engineering
- Measurement uncertainty analysis
- Demonstrable experience with engineering drawings (GD&T) and resolving design-related discrepancies.
Preferred (Not Required)
- Completion of an engineering apprenticeship or attainment of at least HNC level certifications in mechanical/metrology fields.
- Knowledge of surface inspection (e.g., tactile/classical gauging or optical scanning).
- Experience implementing new metrology/inspection equipment.
- Exposure to Six Sigma methodologies and evaluations (Green Belt, Yellow Belt).
- Familiarity with 6σ methodologies and problem-solving techniques.

This role is for British citizens who have lived in the UK for 5 years (for SC security clearance). Eligibility for DV certifications applies similarly.
