About the Role
As a Lunchtime Assistant, you will ideally hold a Level 2 in Early Years qualification to apply your knowledge to support the nursery during peak operational hours (10am–2pm, Monday–Friday). Key responsibilities include assisting with kitchen duties (washing up, cleaning, food preparation, cooking), record-keeping, and facilitating educational and social mealtimes for children. Additional support may be required for laundry, housekeeping, and children’s nap routines during busier periods.
This role requires a strong understanding of food safety and plate-based catering for babies and young children. While experience in this area is advantageous, it is not mandatory.
Description of Duties
Deliver
- Prepare and serve healthy, nutritious meals from approved Cherubs Nurseries menus.
- Champion baking and cooking activities, including:
- Baking with children.
- Preparing food for nursery events (e.g., Parent’s Evening, Summer Fair).
- Dispose of kitchen waste hygienically in designated bins.
- Ensure meals are served on time, adhering to nursery guidelines.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and sanitised environment—including adherence to safeguarding policies.
- Act as a positive role model for children and colleagues.
- Keep toys, equipment, and furniture clean, including disinfection where required.
- Support meal supervision, promoting positive eating habits as part of early learning.
- Stay compliant with all Cherubs Nurseries policies.

Take Ownership
- Monitor food temperatures, especially high-risk items, before service.
- Familiarise yourself with *health and safety, sanitation standards and the nursery’s kitchen regulations.
- Maintain high hygiene, cleanliness and organisation in the kitchen, including equipment (e.g., ovens, fridges).
- Identify peak-demand periods across rooms to prioritise support efficiently.
- Ensure sufficient clean crockery, cutlery, and utensils are available for mealtimes.
- Support with meal hygiene and children’s post-meal cleanliness (e.g., changing clothes, wiping faces).
- Ensure children have labelled bedding and set up their sleep environment per nursery protocols.
- Cover Early Years Educator shifts and Nursery Chef absences, with proper handover.
Commit
- Present a professional appearance (e.g., “dressed for service”).
- Collaborate with Senior Early Years Educators to enhance mealtime routines.
- Uphold confidentiality in all professional interactions.
- Regularly reviews allergies/dietary restrictions records.
- Attend mandatory training, which might include external courses or weekend sessions.
- Complete PLA (Pre-Learning Activities) where applicable (must be done within 7 days of assignment).
Embrace
- Help plan and execute themed activities (indoor/outdoor) to engage children and support their development.

- Share critical information with relevant staff and families promptly.
- Foster professional yet friendly relationships with parents and colleagues.
- Ensure educators always supervise mealtimes and wear PPE.
- Attend staff events (e.g., parents’ evenings, summer fairs, meetings) — some may be held out of hours or on weekends.
- Perform additional duties as reasonably requested.
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum Requirements
- Educated to GCSE Level (or equivalent).
- Food Safety in Catering Certificate (can be provided by Cherubs Nurseries).
Essential (Desirable but Not Mandatory)
- Level 2 Early Years Qualification (desirable).
- Experience working with young children (advantageous).
Bonus Experience
- Catering to children with allergies or dietary restrictions (highly preferred).
- Preparing food for infants/young children (iso a plus).
