Middle School Grade 7 Science Teacher (One Year), THE AMERICAN SCHOOL IN LONDON
Middle School Science Teacher – Grade 7 (One-Year Fixed-Term Position)
Reports to: The Middle School Principal
Hours: Full-time Start date: August 2026
This one-year fixed-term position is to cover a leave of absence.
Overall Purpose
The middle school science teacher is responsible for delivering a science curriculum to middle school students in an engaging, stimulating, and effective manner, using varied instructional strategies. The ideal candidate will:
- Demonstrate the ability to promote inquiry-based learning, where students work both collaboratively and independently to create new knowledge, share materials, problem-solve, and discuss concepts through hands-on activities such as labs, fieldwork, and whole-class discussions.
Summary of Duties
- Teaching & Advisory Role:
- Teach four sections of science (80-minute sessions, four times every eight days).
- Serve as a Grade 7 advisor ( adverse sessions — 30 minutes daily).
- Curriculum Planning:
- Prepare, coordinate, and plan the curriculum with science department members.
- Collaborate with other departments as needed.
- Pedagogical Leadership:
- Stay informed on current trends, pedagogy, research, and key topics in science education, applying these in the classroom and sharing insights departmentally and school-wide.
- Student Assessment & Support:
- Monitor and evaluate student progress.
- Prepare for parent conferences, grade assessments, and complete report cards.
- Safety & Well-Being:
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
- Demonstrate expertise in laboratory safety and explicitly teach safe practices.
- Deliver an engaging, challenging syllabus.
- Field Trips & Active Learning:
- Organize and participate in field trips to support hands-on learning.
- Professional Development & School Engagement:
- Participate in regular science pedagogy meetings and professional development sessions.
- Actively engage in school life through event attendance, committee membership, and extracurricular leadership.
- Additional Duties:
- Perform any other responsibilities within the scope of the role as requested by the Middle School Principal.

Selection Criteria
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree in science or a relevant field.
- Substantive experience teaching middle school science.
- Experience and commitment to collaborative, team-focused work environments.
- Experience with differentiating instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
- Training/experience in intercultural competency to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in classrooms/workplaces.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Significant recent professional development related to the position.
- Commitment to integrating technology for student learning.
- A proven commitment to safeguarding children’s welfare.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safeguarding practices and experience in supporting student well-being.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience:
- Experience with standards-based curricula.
- Knowledge/experience in integrated or thematic instruction.
- Familiarity with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
- Experience in advisory, mentoring, or delivering social-emotional learning curricula.
