The Mine Engineer
The Mine Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, development, and optimisation of quarry operations to ensure the safe, efficient, environmentally compliant, and cost-effective extraction of chalk for lime production. The role supports long-term reserve management, drill and blast design, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Develop and maintain short, medium, and long-term quarry extraction plans
- Design quarry development phases, haul roads, benches, ramps, and stockpile areas
- Produce excavation designs and ensure compliance with approved planning permissions and geological models
- Monitor quarry reserves and support mineral resource evaluations
- Provide technical input into life-of-mine planning and production forecasting
- Design and optimise drilling and blasting programmes to maximise rock fragmentation and minimise environmental impact
- Analyse blast performance and implement improvements to productivity and cost efficiency
- Ensure compliance with explosive regulations and company procedures
- Liaise with blasting contractors and specialist suppliers
- Monitor quarry production against budget and operational targets
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment utilisation, productivity, and extraction efficiency
- Conduct operational studies and recommend improvements to mining methods and processes
- Support day-to-day operational decision-making through technical analysis and reporting
- Manage quarry surveys using GPS, drone, and survey software technologies
- Maintain accurate quarry plans and digital terrain models
- Monitor bench and slope stability and identify geotechnical risks
- Support implementation of geotechnical controls and inspection programmes
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation
- Participate in risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits
- Ensure quarry activities comply with the Quarries Regulations 1999, Health and Safety at Work Act, and other applicable UK legislation
- Support environmental management initiatives relating to dust, noise, vibration, water management, and restoration activities
- Prepare technical reports, plans, permits, and statutory documentation
- Maintain accurate production, reserve, and performance records
- Assist with inspections by regulatory authorities and external stakeholders
- Responsible for key mining KPIs such as yield, cycle times and efficiency’s
- Support quarry budgeting and capital project planning
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance operational performance
- Evaluate new technologies and engineering solutions
- Contribute to sustainability, carbon reduction, and resource efficiency initiatives
- Any other activity that is commensurate with the scope and level of the role

Job Requirements (Qualifications and Experience)

- Degree in Mining Engineering, Minerals Engineering, Quarry Engineering or a related discipline
- Experience in quarrying, mining, extractive industries, or heavy industrial operations
- Knowledge of drill and blast techniques and quarry design principles
- Drill and blast design experience is preferred
- Experience with any drill and blast software such as quarryX is preferred
- Proficiency in mine planning and surveying software
- Shotfirer, explosives awareness, or geotechnical qualifications
- Experience using drone survey technology and digital mine planning systems desirable
- Strong understanding of UK health, safety, and environmental legislation
- Solid grasp of core engineering principles, process optimisation, and applied techniques
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent qualification is preferable
- Awareness of ISO9001, 14001 and 45001 would be an advantage
- IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent
- Full UK Driving Licence
