About the Role
As a Miner at Joseph Gallagher Ltd, you will play a critical role in safety, tunnelling operations, and project execution. This is a hands-on position requiring compliance with H&S standards and a strong work ethic. Both knowledge of tunnelling methods and health and safety discipline are essential.
Responsibilities
Your role will include (but not be limited to):
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure the safety of yourself and others in the work environment at all times.
- Fully understand, acknowledge, and abide by all Risk Assessments (RAM) and Safety Operating Systems (SOS) briefings assigned to your task.
- Confirm valid qualifications for the role prior to commencing work.
- Report immediately any near misses, incidents, or accidents to the JGL Supervisor without delay.
- Follow strict H&S (Health & Safety) policies to maintain a safe workplace.

Work Environment & Procedures
- Keep your work area neat and tidy; cease work immediately if necessary to conduct a comprehensive housekeeping check of the area.
- Enforce the company’s Hazardous Substances and Materials in use (COSHH) guidelines, ensuring correct storage, handling, and disposal.
- Do not operate any plant or equipment without the requisite training or authorisation.
- Maintain responsibility for exclusion zones—ensure you and your team never operate in designated hazardous areas or position tools/plants unsafely.
- Report damaged or worn plant to the Lead Miner at once; convey into regular maintenance schedules if concerns arise.
- Clean and maintain all plant and tools at the end of every shift, unless set for immediate use in subsequent operations.
Manual Handling & Organised Workflow
- Eliminate manual tasks as far as reasonably practicable—prefer mechanical aids and equipment where safe and viable, adhering to prescribed protocols.
- If manual handling is unavoidable, follow correct procedures to reduce physical risk.
- Never obstruct escape routes, doorways or walkways with stacked materials; recognise and adhere to designated stacking zones.
Permissions & Coordination
- Ensure all permits and paperwork are in place prior to commencing work.
- Coordinate lifting operations with approved persons before proceeding.
- Uphold proper communication with the wider tunnelling team to maintain smooth operations and adherence to safety protocols.

Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- Hold valid, current qualifications for tunnelling activities and machinery operation.
- Evidence of compliance with H&S standards and tunnelling principles (working knowledge or practical experience as applicable).
Core Skills
- High attention to health and safety protocols on busy worksites.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in dynamic field conditions.
- Practical manual dexterity where manual handling or emergency response is occasional but critical.
