We currently have 4 vacancies for Mobile Maintenance Train (MMT) Fitters
Locations: Romford, Basingstoke, Horsham, Retford
About The Contract
Colas Rail have recently been awarded the Mobile Maintenance Train (MMT) contract. This covers the maintenance, operation, and driving of a fleet of eight MMTs based across the UK. We are recruiting for 4 Fitters to work on the Network Rail–owned MMT fleet. No prior rail experience is required; full training is provided.
About The Role
MMTs are fully equipped engineering workshops on rails. They provide a safe, mobile workspace for teams fixing track defects and carry the equipment and materials needed at the worksite. As an MMT Fitter, you will keep the trains safe, reliable, and fit for service through planned maintenance, inspections, and fault finding, and provide technical support during operational shifts.
The Fitter is responsible for carrying out essential maintenance on Mobile Maintenance Trains (MMTs) to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations. This role forms part of a graded structure, starting at a Trainee level, progressing to Maintainer, then to Fitter, and then to Technician, with increasing responsibilities and technical expertise. Key responsibilities include operating the A50 and hoist, performing regular maintenance and repairs, and troubleshooting technical issues. The role also involves maintaining accurate technical and engineering documentation to relevant departments, supporting high-performance targets, and ensuring excellent results with minimal downtime.
Working Pattern
- Five week roster averaging 40 hours per week (200 hours per roster)
- Mixture of days, nights, and weekends; bank holidays as rostered
- Fully compliant with rail fatigue management standards
- Occasional travel to other depots for operational cover may be required

Key Responsibilities
- Follow maintenance schedules to ensure fleet reliability and compliance
- Conduct preventative servicing, inspections, and mechanical repairs
- Diagnose and rectify faults on diesel engines, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical drive systems; basic electrical fault finding
- Prepare trains for overnight operation; provide on-train engineering support as required
- Complete depot-based servicing and accurate maintenance records
- Use onboard diagnostics and IT systems (Windows-based)

Essential
- Level 3 qualification in a mechanical or engineering discipline
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Must live within an hour commute of either Romford, Basingstoke, Horsham, or Retford
- Able to work weekends, bank holidays, and a mixture of days and nights as part of a shift-based roster.
- Computer literate (Microsoft Windows)
- As part of our onboarding process, successful candidates will be invited to have a DBS screening completed and attend a mandatory medical and will need to be declared as medically fit for the role.
Desirable
- Previous experience working on Mobile Maintenance Trains
- Previous railway experience
- Level 4 in a mechanical/engineering or relevant discipline
