Mobile Mechanic

Mobile Mechanic (HGV Field Service Engineer) – Permanent Role

John Lanes Group are delighted to open applications for an exciting Mobile Mechanic (HGV Field Service Engineer) role to support our new major contract with Southern Water.

  • Location: Based at our Millbrook depot (Southampton), covering southern locations (including Sussex, Hampshire & the Isle of Wight)
  • Job Type: Permanent, Full-time (Monday–Friday, 40hrs/week)
  • Salary: Competitive up to £55,000 per annum (to include bonuses, OT and on-call allowance)
  • Benefits: 21 days holiday (+ birthday-off); health cash plan; company van + fuel card; pension scheme; childcare support; friendly environment

The Role: specialised mobile maintenance

You’ll maintain a fleet of HGVs, vans & hydraulic/high-pressure jetting systems across Southern Water’s territory. Key responsibilities include:

Essential Tasks:

  • Hydraulic Systems Inspection
    • Deep technical knowledge of hydraulic components, pumps, hoses and control systems.
    • Troubleshoot and repair high-pressure jetting units used for drain/sewer cleaning.
  • Vehicle Maintenance & Repairs
    • Routine inspections & preventive maintenance for company vehicles.
    • Diagnose faults in hydraulics and jetting equipment with minimal downtime.
  • Emergency Reponses
    • On-site repairs for breakdowns and hydraulic emergencies.
    • Collaborate with teams to resolve recurring issues.
  • Legislation & Safety
    • Up-to-date with health/safety/environmental compliance.
    • Drive quality, risk assessment, and accident prevention as per company policies.

About You

  • Must have:

    • Proven experience in commercial HGV servicing & maintenance.
    • UK driving licence (Class B essential, Class C+E/HGV) required.
    • Industry recognised qualifications (e.g., City & Guilds or equivalent).
    • HSE compliance awareness, IOSH/NEBOSH qualifications highly preferred.
  • Preferred:

    • Past experience in the water utility sector.
    • Hydraulics expertise or broader heavy transport knowledge.
