Mobile Plant Operator

Plant Operator (Mobile Plant) – Permanent Full-Time Role

Contract & Location

  • Contract Type: Permanent
  • Working Pattern: Full time
  • Location: Based at Hexham Transfer Station, Hexham, Northumberland (NE46 4DL)
  • Hours: 38.5 per week (07:00 to 18:00) over 4-day shifts (4 on, 4 off)
  • Overtime: Required when necessary
  • Salary: £14.00 per hour + monthly bonus of £180 (conditions apply)
    • Potential OTE (On-Time Earnings) of £30,200

About the Role

At SUEZ Hexham Transfer Station, we are seeking a skilled Plant Operator to manage mobile plant safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with health, safety, and recycling targets.

Your Key Responsibilities

To successfully operate and maintain plant equipment, you will be responsible for:

  • Operating Mobile Plant – Managing loading shoves, stock, vehicles, and wagons while adhering to strict safety standards.

    • Loading materials accurately and efficiently.
    • Guiding arriving vehicles safely.
  • Equipment Maintenance & Monitoring

    • Conducting daily/weekly/monthly checks, maintenance, and cleaning of loading shovels and other site plant.
    • Recording and reporting any defects on plant equipment promptly.

  • Optimal Waste & Recycling Operations

    • Ensuring maximum recycling and recovery within the facility.
    • Reducing waste sent to landfill.
    • Supporting the Household Waste & Recycling Centre (HWRC) – keeping hatches clear and operating efficiently.
  • Shift-Related Duties

    • Covering Weighbridge shifts across weekends/holidays and during sickness absences.
  • Yard Management & Safety Compliance

    • Enforcing pedestrian and vehicle segregation to prevent accidents.
    • Maintaining yard cleanliness through litter picking.
    • Ensuring full compliance with health and safety policies, permits, and environmental legislation.
  • Health & Safety Leadership

    • Upholding SUEZ’s commitment to safety—protecting employees, visiting drivers, and guests.
  • Full Training Provided

    • Comprehensive training will be given for all operations.

Requirements

We’re looking for an enthusiastic, reliable team player with strong communication skills, ready to uphold high standards in plant operations.

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience Operating Loading Shovel – Strongly preferred but not essential (glider skills measurable by assessing acceleration times required).
  • Excellent Communication & Teamwork – Critical for collaboration with the wider HWRC team.
  • Adaptability – Willingness to cover other operational tasks (e.g., weekends, holidays).
  • Attention to Detail – Maintaining vehicle/yard safety records (FIRS reporting).
  • Health & Safety Awareness – Proactive approach to compliance.
