Company Description
UK Fusion Energy (UKFE) Ltd, a subsidiary of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), is pioneering sustainable fusion energy through its STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) programme. Aiming to construct a prototype fusion power plant by 2040, UKFE leads global collaboration, with an industry potential valued at £7tn annually.
Based in West Burton, Nottinghamshire, this role offers 3 days onsite per week with flexible working supported.

Salary: £64,115, plus a £7,700 non-contractual specialist allowance (non-pensionable). Closing date: 10 July 2026.
About the Role
We seek a Lead MBSE Engineer to shape Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) strategy for the STEP programme. This pivotal role positions you as the technical authority for MBSE, integrating expertise across the organisation and its partners to deliver this world-leading fusion energy project.
You will:
- Define and implementation a transformational MBSE capability
- Foster collaboration with Systems Engineering Manager and technical teams
- Develop and communicate a clear MBSE roadmap
- Champion best practices in MBSE across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities
Define MBSE Capability Future State
- Develop and communicate a vision and strategy for MBSE implementation
- Own definitions of MBSE across people, process, and tools
- Establish competency frameworks, role profiles, and training pathways
- Define requirements for MBSE toolchains and process development
Implement & Continuously Improve
- Maintain the MBSE framework, including reusable models and templates
- Define lifecycle expectations and monitor "What good looks like"
- Guide delivery teams in embedding MBSE
- Drive lessons-learned continuous improvement
Champion MBSE Across the Organisation
- Serve as the authoritative voice on MBSE methods and practices
- Mentor engineers in MBSE adoption
- Represent UKFE in external forums and industry forums
- Build and sustain communities of practice
Assure MBSE Capability
- Define and govern MBSE policy, standards, and conventions
- Approve deviations and enforce compliance
- Establish model quality criteria (traceability, completeness, usability)
- Approve models for programme assurance
Leadership & Culture
- Demonstrate leadership and professionalism
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing environment
- Model integrity and ethical standards
- Support data-driven decision-making
Qualifications
Essential:
- Degree in a STEM field
- Chartered Engineer registration (e.g., IfSE, IET, IMechE etc.)
- Proven experience in defining/embedding new organisational capabilities
- Demonstrable expertise in MBSE tools, languages, and frameworks
- Practical experience in defining and enforcing policies, standards, and conventions
- Significant knowledge of Systems Engineering applied pragmatically
- Evidenced leadership communication skills for influencing diverse stakeholders

- Member or Associate of Institution for Systems Engineering (MIfSE/ASEP/CSEP)
- OMG-certified SysML professional
- Experience with Dassault Systèmes 3DS tools (e.g., Catia Magic, 3DX)
