Lead Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Engineer

Company Description

UK Fusion Energy (UKFE) Ltd, a subsidiary of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), is at the forefront of developing sustainable fusion energy. Through the STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) programme, we are designing and constructing a prototype fusion plant, targeting first operations in the 2040s.

As part of UKFE’s mission, we aim to lead delivery through collaboration with industrial partners and foster a fusion supply chain with an estimated global sector value of £7 trillion per year.

Working Arrangements

This is a hybrid role, with on-site work expected for 3 days per week. We actively support requests for Flexible Working.

Salary & Allowances

  • Base salary: £64,115
  • Specialist allowance (non-contractual & non-pensionable): £7,700 (Note: Full benefits including the pension scheme remain separate from the allowance.)

About the Role

We are seeking a Lead MBSE Engineer to oversight the Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) strategy for the STEP programme—a first-of-a-kind commercial fusion power plant. This is a unique opportunity to shape our approach to MBSE, influencing our organisational technical authority, processes, and tooling.

As the MBSE lead, you will:

  • Define and deliver a transformational MBSE capability to drive the success of one of the most ambitious engineering programmes globally.
  • Work closely with the Systems Engineering Manager and cross-functional teams to develop an implementation roadmap that embodies best practices while balancing programme complexity.
  • Champion MBSE adoption, ensuring it delivers real value and supports programme objectives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Define & Embed MBSE Strategy

  • Develop and communicate a clear MBSE vision and implementation strategy
  • Own the capability definition across people, processes, and tools
  • Establish competency frameworks, role profiles, and training pathways
  • Define requirements for MBSE toolchains and process development

2. Implement & Drive Continuous Improvement

  • Own and maintain the MXSE framework, including reusable models and templates
  • Define lifecycle expectations and help teams understand “what good looks like”
  • Support delivery teams in embedding MBSE into project plans
  • Drive continuous improvement through lessons learned and process refinement

3. Champion MBSE Across the Organisation

  • Act as the authoritative voice on MBSE methods and approaches
  • Coach and mentor engineers in MBSE practices
  • Represent UKFE in external forums and industry collaborations
  • Build and sustain communities of practice within the organisation

4. Assure MBSE Capability

  • Define and govern MBSE policy, standards, and conventions
  • Propose and approve deviations while ensuring compliance
  • Establish model quality criteria (e.g., traceability, completeness, usability)
  • Approve models for decision-making and programme assurance

5. Leadership & Culture

  • Exhibit a strong leadership mindset aligned with organisational values
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing environment
  • Demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and ethical standards
  • Support effective decision-making through complex challenges

Qualifications

Essential

  • A relevant degree in a recognised STEM discipline
  • Professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (e.g., with IfSE, IET, IMechE)
  • Experienced in defining and embedding new capabilities across organisations
  • Demonstrable expertise in MBSE tools, languages, and frameworks
  • Experience defining and enforcing policies, standards, and conventions
  • Strong knowledge of Systems Engineering with practical application
  • Exceptional communicator, with proven ability to influence across diverse stakeholders

  • ASEP or CSEP certification by the International Council of Systems Engineering
  • OMG-certified SysML Professional (Model Builder: Fundamental/Intermediate/Advanced)
