Systems Engineer – High-Speed Aerodynamic & Aerothermodynamic Modelling

About the Role
The Systems Engineer opportunity is ideal for a modelling and simulation engineer seeking to specialise in high-speed aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic modelling at Lockheed Martin’s Ampthill site. This diverse, multi-disciplinary role will require integral collaboration across defence engineering teams to deliver critical analyses supporting programme ambitions.
The ideal candidate will align with Lockheed Martin’s core values (integrity, commitment, excellence) in a fast-paced, team-based environment. This role is perfect for engineers eager to contribute to defence innovation, working alongside chief engineers, stakeholders, and cross-disciplinary groups to propel high-performance systems engineering.
Key Responsibilities
The Systems Engineer will partner across a growing programme, bringing expertise in:
- Modelling and Systems Engineering Activities:
- High-fidelity general external flow aerodynamics modelling
- Trajectory modelling for defence applications
- Aerothermodynamics modelling in extreme high-speed environments
- Thermal response analysis for system stability
- Model optimisation and validation against trial results
- Ground trials analysis to inform system refinements
- Cross-programme support, as required

- Engineering Advancement:
- Present and document findings clearly to support technical reports/reviews.
- Demonstrates self-motivation and ownership to meet deadlines.
- Customer-focused interactions (both internal/external) to clarify methodologies and milestones.
Requirements & Skills
Technical & Educational Background:
- Proven experience in numerical modelling/computational methods and compute-heavy simulations.
- Understanding of basic statistical methods (e.g., uncertainty quantification, sensitivity studies).
- Degree-level qualifications (or equivalent career certifications) with a focus on:
- Aeronautical / aerospace engineering,
- Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) or related specialisms,
- Mechanical, aerospace or safety-critical engineering.
- Practical exposure to aerodynamic/Aeroelastic concepts a strong asset.
Technical Skills:
- Mastery of windows & linux operating environments (for model development/verification).
- Common usage of ** Meshing software, CFD tools** (e.g. StarCCM+, OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent).
- Familiarity with trajectory modelling software (e.g. STK, Python/SciPy libraries).
- Python/R scripting experience preferred.
- Comfort with version control systems (e.g. Git).
Behavioural Competencies:
- Strong writing and reporting competency (technical and stakeholder level).
- Confident and clear verbal communication for presentations.
- Self-drive & resilience required for complex deadline-driven work.
- Team collaboration skills essential, working in multi-disciplinary groups.
- Preference given to candidates with classified work experience or the willingness to pursue DV Clearance.
