Module Leader: Cooling System (Automotive Powertrain Thermal Systems)
At Tata Technologies, we make product development dreams a reality by designing, engineering, and validating the products of tomorrow for the world’s leading manufacturers. Due to our continued growth, we are now recruiting for a Module Leader: Cooling System to be based at our customer’s site in Gaydon.
Our Engineering Research and Development (ER&D) department is a fast-growing function within Tata Technologies Limited, assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialised engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.
About the Role
This is a critical specialist SME role leading the design, development, integration, validation, and delivery of complete thermal management systems for ICE, MHEV, HEV, and PHEV vehicle applications. You will report to senior management as the technical lead and primary interface for powertrain cooling system activities, ensuring alignment with customer requirements and development timelines.
Key accountabilities include:
- Technical leadership in powertrain cooling system architecture, thermal performance, and system integration
- End-to-end vehicle-level thermal management accountability
- Close collaboration with propulsion, thermal, calibration, manufacturing, and supplier teams
- Root-cause resolution for reliability and durability issues
- Supplier and offshore team coordination to deliver on schedule
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Technical Expertise
- Act as the technical lead and primary customer interface for powertrain cooling system activities
- Provide expertise in cooling system architecture, thermal performance, integration, and validation
- Ensure systems meet performance, durability, efficiency, quality, cost, and timing objectives
Engineering Development & Validation
- Lead the engineering development of complete cooling systems, including:
- Radiators
- Coolant pumps (hydraulic & electric)
- Expansion tanks
- Plastic & metal hoses/pipes
- Thermostats & valves
- A/C condensers, charge-air coolers, oil coolers, hybrid battery cooling systems
- Degas systems, corrosion protection, and secondary oil/fluid circuits
- Define thermal management strategies achieving vehicle performance and durability targets across conditions (towing, high ambient, cold starts, altitude, transient drive cycles)
- Foster supplier collaboration and ensure components meet technical, cost, and schedule objectives
- Mentor onsite and offshore engineering teams, sharing best practices in cooling system development
Problem-Solving & Issue Resolution
- Drive DFMEA, DVP&R, and Design Reviews, ensuring technical maturity at key signing-off stages
- Lead issues resolution for:
- Cooling system failures
- Durability concerns
- Thermal performance anomalies
- Leaks and integrity failures
- Customer interface for escalations and corrective actions
- Conduct in-depth root-cause analysis and implement solutions aligned with system and program needs

Program Delivery & Stakeholder Management
- Escalate risks and uncertainties through the product lifecycle lifecycle (from early concept through launch and production)
- Collaborate with calibration, vehicle integration, thermal, emissions, and propulsion teams to optimise thermal policies and system compatibility
- Support launch readiness and production introduction, including APQP, PPAP, and PPF activities
- Maintain alignment with customer and programme requirements, ensuring clear solutions and validations
Essential Qualifications

Education:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Automotive, Thermal, Aerospace or related Engineering discipline

Experience & Knowledge:
- 8–12 years of automotive thermal/cooling system expertise, with deep experience in:
- Engine cooling, transmission/oil cooling and hybrid thermal management systems
- Design and integration of radiators, cooling modules, pumps, heat exchangers, coolant circuits (inlets, outlets, piping)
- Advanced thermal management for MHEV, HEV, and hybrid battery cooling systems
- Strong understanding of:
- Thermodynamics, heat transfer principles (conduction, convection, radiation)
- CFD, leakage analysis, thermal cycling, CFRP/hybrid material degradation
- Proven familiarity with:
- Requirements management, supplied MIM/MPS methodologies
- DFMEA, DVP&R, design reviews, and sign-off processes
- Automotive product development lifecycle (PPI, AVL, engines, hybrids)
- 8–12 years of automotive thermal/cooling system expertise, with deep experience in:

Technical & Analytical Skills:
- Deep coefficient calculation best practices for standard cooling hardware
- Coolant flow modeling, pump NPSH analysis, and Venturi-generated performance loss studies
- Root-cause failure analysis, connecting cooling system failures to broader integration, design, and materials aspects
- Advanced Excel/VBA skills and potential PLM (Teamcenter, PTC, Istree) experience

Soft Skills & Collaboration:
- Ability to communicate complex technical issues to customers and non-cooling specialists
- Strong stakeholder and cross-functional management for program and delivery objectives
Desired Qualifications
- Proven experience supporting OEM cooling system programmes
- Specialised knowledge of hybrid vehicle thermal management systems
- HEV/PHEV experience for electrification cooling system needs
- Familiarity with:
- Coolant innovations and new **materials (**Strongray, sintered metal,.indexing technologies, heat pump regulation)
- APQP, PPAP process, and production launch activities
- Durability pressure cycling (EPV, TFD, GMIP standards), powder testing, and thermal ageing
- Vibration analysis (harmonic testing, NVH-related pressure) and environmental validation (Climatic chambers, rugged ness testing)
- Six Sigma, DMAIC, 8D or structured problem-solving methodologies”
- Software tools: CATIA V5/V6, Teamcenter/Creo, ANSYS Fluent, 1D/3D CFD, Wind deleted, or thermal estimation methodologies
