Motor Vehicle Technician
Motor Vehicle Mechanic (Scale 6) – Permanent, Full-Time Role
Location: Crus Laurie Business Park, The Lakes, Cambridgeshire Salary: £33,603 per annum (rising to £35,772 with service) Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00
About the Role
At Cambridgeshire Constabulary, we ensure the police fleet—comprising over 460 vehicles—is always operational and compliant to deliver critical services to our diverse communities.
As a Motor Vehicle Mechanic, you’ll be responsible for:
- Maintaining, servicing, and repairing mechanical, electrical, and electronic components of police vehicles and plant
- Conducting safety inspections, diagnostic testing, and troubleshooting
- Attending vehicle breakdowns to relieve operational disruption
- Completing essential documentation (job sheets, service sheets, time sheets, and stores requisitions)
We’re seeking a skilled professional who can uphold high-quality standards, work efficiently both independently and in a team, and demonstrate a commitment to health and safety in workshop environments.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical & Technical Work
- Diagnose and repair faults in motor vehicles, engines, and associated systems
- Conduct MOT tests (where qualified)
- Ensure compliance with ** théâtral standards** for vehicles in active service
- Carry out consistent, high-quality work to meet operational demands
Operational Support
- Respond to vehicle breakdowns to minimise disruption
- Execute safety checks and preventative maintenance schedules
- Generate and submit accurate documentation for work completed

Requirements
Essential
- Previous experience in a motor vehicle workshop (commercial, dealership, or fleet maintenance)
- NVQ Level 3 (Motor Vehicle) or equivalent in either mechanical or electrical specialism
- Full, current UK driving licence
- Motor Vehicle related apprenticeship
- Strong organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable
- City & Guilds Motor Vehicle (Mechanical/Electrical) Level 3 qualification
- Experience in a main dealership (or similar vehicle specialist environment)
- MOT tester qualification (not essential but preferred)
- Up-to-date health & safety knowledge in workshop settings
- Direct experience working with a diverse range of vehicle models
