Warden – Mousehold Heath, Norwich
Mousehold Heath, a distinctive mixed woodland and heathland open space at the heart of Norwich, is seeking a passionate second warden to join our team. The role involves balancing the needs of recreation and conservation while ensuring both visitors and wildlife thrive.
You will deliver an agreed programme of practical, interpretive, and ecological works—including engaging visitors, patrolling, leading guided walks, and coordinating contractors and volunteers.
The Role
Contribute to the day-to-day management of Mousehold Heath, upholding bylaws while delivering a dynamic mix of conservation, education, and administration.
Responsibilities
- Carry out patrolling, enforce bylaws, and maintain site security
- Organise and oversee works undertaken by Norwich City Council contractors and other external providers
- Enhance public engagement by promoting the Heath, leading guided walks, and creating interpretive content
- Manage folder administration, including purchase orders, expenditure tracking, and report submission
- Attend and produce warden reports for the Mousehold Heath Full Conservators and Subgroup meetings
- Comply with legislation, Health & Safety at Work, and other regulations—writing and implementing risk assessments as required
- Support the development and implementation of the Mousehold Heath Management Plan
- Manage and lead volunteer teams in practical conservation tasks
- Perform practical management work, maintaining ecological balance

Skills & Qualifications
Essential Requirements
Experience & Skills
- Passion for conservation, historical, and landscape management, with a commitment to engaging the public
- Strong ability to influence others and handle public interactions with professionalism
- Self-motivation with excellent planning, time management, and organisational skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication, confidence speaking in public, and ability to create interpretive materials
- Sensitivity to diverse community perspectives and proactive equality, diversity, and inclusion mindset
- Proven ability to organise educational activities for both adults and children
- Teamwork skills, fostering strong relationships with colleagues, managers, and stakeholders
- Problem-solving and practical troubleshooting experience
- Exemplary customer service—proactively enhancing visitor experience
Educational Requirements
- Level 3 Countryside Management-related qualification (essential)
- Evidence of continuing professional development in related fields
