What You’d Be Doing

As an inclusive, forward-thinking business, Avara Foods is seeking a competent and motivated Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer to join the Engineering Team in Telford.

This factory-based role is challenging, as you’ll work in a fast-paced, dynamic FMCG environment. Key conditions include:

  • Work environment: Commercial factory (hours can be noisy and refrigerated in some areas), manufacturing short-shelf-life products under strict hygiene standards
  • Shift pattern: Rotating 4 on, 4 off shifts (06:00–18:30 and 18:00–06:30)

  • Optimise machinery performance (output and quality) while minimising downtime
  • Implement preventative and corrective maintenance to ensure operational efficiency
  • Promote safe, healthy engineering practices throughout the site

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Dynamic response to breakdowns: Lead your team effectively during equipment failures, leveraging skills and experience.
  • Adhere to maintenance schedules: Follow Preventative Maintenance (PPM) policies and carry out efficient corrective actions.
  • Quick problem-solving: Respond promptly to breakdowns across the site, identifying root causes and proposing preventative improvements.
  • Communication: Report unscheduled downtime to the Engineering Shift Manager/Principal Engineer and collaborate with operations to mitigate disruption.
  • Compliance and standards: Follow engineering standards, hygiene, and health & safety protocols while identifying and recommending improvements.
  • Risk management: Report violations related to health & safety, animal welfare, and environmental issues promptly.
  • Fault diagnostics: Apply basic techniques to diagnose underlying mechanical/electrical issues.
  • Administration: Manage spare parts via CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System), log and complete maintenance jobs, and submit Stock/Non-Stock Request forms.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

Requirements:

✅ An advanced Engineering Apprenticeship in mechanical or electrical disciplines ✅ Solid experience in engineering (preferably within food manufacturing) ✅ Familiarity with process machinery equivalent equipment, with a strong ability to troubleshoot and resolve faults ✅ Mechanical fitter skills ( avantageously with machining, welding/fabrication experience) ✅ Yes, it’s a team effort – you’ll mentor and support colleagues ✅ A self-motivated, organised individual able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

Desirable (but nice to have):

  • Industrial refrigeration experience (not essential though!)
  • IEE 17th or 18th Edition certification
  • Advanced electrical qualifications (for example at NVQ/qualification level)
  • PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), Variable Speed Drives, and control system knowledge
