Multi Skilled Maintenance Technician – Permanent Role (Darlington)
Location: Darlington, United Kingdom Employer: Cummins Inc. (Manufacturing Team – Darlington Technical Organisation) Work Type: Permanent, Onsite, Rotational Shift Pattern
Shift Schedule
Monday–Friday:
- 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM
About the Role
We are seeking a talented Multi Skilled Maintenance Technician to support our Manufacturing and test cell operations, ensuring high availability and reliability of critical plant and equipment. This is a fully onsite role where you will contribute to:
- Test cell maintenance and repairs
- Proactive predictive troubleshooting
- Safety, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Technical liaison and project leadership
Key Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Maintain high availability and reliability of test cells and supporting plant through proactive maintenance and repairs across the facility.
- Rapidly diagnose and resolve breakdowns in test cells, prioritising shutdowns to restore testing operations with minimal disruption.
- Optimise test cell performance by prioritising development activities for efficient and high-quality engine testing.
- Independently plan, prioritise, and deliver maintenance activities to boost site productivity.
- Champion safety by:
- Identifying risks and controls
- Ensuring safe systems of work before repairs
- Compliance with Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) and permit-to-work processes
- Serve as a key technical liaison for DTO (Darlington Technical Organisation) team, offering expertise on facility and test cell concerns.
- Lead small in-house improvement projects, from problem definition to successful implementation.
- Drive continuous improvement by:
- Identifying recurring facility issues
- Proposing robust solutions for improvement

Requirements
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Multidisciplinary fault-finding and problem-solving in:
- Mechanical systems
- Electrical systems
- Instrumentation
- Software-integrated equipment
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision while making fast, sound decisions in a 24/7 operational environment.
- Confidence in contracting management, including:
- Issuing permits-to-work
- Supervising contractors
- Ensuring full LOTO compliance
- Strong safety-first mindset, balancing:
- Operational urgency
- Quality and legal requirements
- Environmental compliance

Education & Experience
- NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds 2365 Level 3 in engineering/electrical or equivalent.
- BS 7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations certification required.
- HNC in a relevant engineering discipline (preferred).
- Significant experience in an industrial or manufacturing maintenance environment, with a proven ability to:
- Troubleshoot complex systems
- Maintain and improve plant efficiency
Compensation & Details
- UIA (Unionised or Local Bargained Agreement) rate.
- 100% onsite – fully remote work is not permitted.
- Processing for export compliance may require licensing due to export controls or sanctions regulations.
