Multi-Skilled Technical Operator

Job Purpose The Multi-Skilled Technical Operator (MSTO) is responsible for supporting the successful delivery of live and recorded broadcast output across GB News. The role sits within the Production Operations team and provides operational support across a range of technical functions, including studio operations, master control and support desk activities. The role is accountable for ensuring the smooth operation of live broadcasts, maintaining technical quality standards and providing operational and technical support to production teams, remote contributors and engineering colleagues. The postholder will work in a fast-paced live news environment and contribute to the delivery of high-quality broadcast content across multiple platforms. Key Accountabilities Operational Responsibilities Support various operational functions including Studio Duties, Master Control and Support Desk activities. Operate live broadcasts to ensure seamless and uninterrupted content delivery. Monitor broadcast signals, identify issues promptly and resolve transmission problems efficiently. Provide technical support to remote contributors, including Video Journalists (VJs), ENG Camera Operator and outside broadcast teams. Collaborate with engineering teams to troubleshoot and maintain broadcast systems, software and technical equipment. Operate video routers and switchers to manage video and audio signal flow throughout the facility. Manage content ingestion into servers and oversee playout systems. Conduct audio and video quality control checks to ensure signal integrity, appropriate audio levels and broadcast-quality output. Support maintenance activities relating to broadcast hardware, including servers, encoders, decoders and transmission equipment. Monitor multiple feeds and signals simultaneously, maintaining high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Work effectively across multiple operational tasks within a fast-paced live production environment. Stakeholder Responsibilities Work closely with producers, presenters, gallery teams and technical colleagues to support programme delivery. Build effective working relationships with engineering teams to ensure the reliability and performance of broadcast systems. Provide responsive support to internal and external production stakeholders. Maintain effective communication with remote contributors and field-based teams. Administrative, Compliance and Reporting Responsibilities Follow operational procedures, technical standards and broadcast compliance requirements. Maintain accurate records, logs and operational reports where required. Escalate technical issues appropriately and support incident resolution processes. Comply with company policies, health and safety requirements and operational governance standards. Key Deliverables & Success Measures Consistent delivery of high-quality live and recorded broadcast output. Effective monitoring and management of broadcast signals and operational workflows. Timely identification, escalation and quick resolution of technical issues. Maintenance of audio, video and transmission quality standards. Positive support provided to production teams, engineering colleagues and remote contributors. Accurate completion of operational reporting and shift handovers. Person Specification Essential Criteria Experience working within a broadcast, television production or technical operations environment. Hands-on experience with broadcast production tools, systems and technologies. Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team. Strong communication skills and excellent attention to detail. Ability to multitask and perform effectively in a fast-paced live broadcast environment. Ability to work flexible 8-hour shifts, including early, mid and late shifts in line with production requirements. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work calmly under pressure. A willingness to learn and develop new broadcast and news production skills. Desirable Criteria Experience supporting live news or current affairs programming. Knowledge of master control room operations and broadcast transmission workflows. Experience working with video routing, playout or signal monitoring systems. Understanding of broadcast engineering principles and technical troubleshooting processes. Experience supporting remote production or outside broadcast operations.
