Energy Rater – Multifamily Construction
Location: Northeast Region | Type: Full-time
Sustainable Comfort, Inc. (SCI) is a green building and energy efficiency consulting firm specializing in multifamily housing. About the Role
The Energy Rater ensures that multifamily construction projects meet the highest energy efficiency standards, supporting compliance with green building certification programs—including HERS, ENERGY STAR, LEED, and more. Our ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and eager to grow within the green building industry.
This position provides hands-on experience testing, inspecting, and certifying projects while developing technical expertise and making a tangible difference in building sustainability.
Key Responsibilities

On-Site Compliance:
- Evaluate construction sites for adherence to energy efficiency standards, including HERS ratings and other certifications.
- Conduct field diagnostic tests such as blower door and duct leakage assessments to measure building performance.

Technical & Reporting:
- Develop and maintain HERS energy models, ensuring data accuracy in analysis.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports, documenting deficiencies and recommending corrective actions.
- Organize and maintain project documentation for certification and audits.

Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Provide training and support to subcontractors and construction teams on energy performance requirements.
- Work closely with contractors, developers, and other stakeholders to set inspection schedules, clarify program expectations, and troubleshoot issues.

Field & Administrative:
- Travel frequently within a 60–90-mile radius for inspections, meetings, and testing.
- Act as a quality assurance liaison to uphold energy efficiency standards throughout project development.
Role Expectations
As a key contributor in the field, the Energy Rater is expected to:
- Deliver accurate, timely, and transparent inspection results.
- Establish strong relationships with project stakeholders.
- Adhere to quality assurance protocols and identify opportunities for energy improvements.
- Showcase problem-solving drive and a commitment to continuous technical growth.
Success in this role is defined by reliable performance, collaborative spirit, and a dedication to advancing sustainable building practices.
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- At least 2 years of experience in construction, energy efficiency, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications
- Trade school education, Associate’s degree, or relevant certifications (e.g., EPA certification, HERS rater training).
- Familiarity with HERS ratings, ENERGY STAR, or other green building programs.
- Technical aptitude for energy diagnostics, compliance testing, and performance analysis.
