About the Role

The Collections Committee is a sub-committee and advisory body of the Board of Trustees of the Science Museum (SMG Board). It provides a key governing role in the oversight of SMG's unparalleled object, archive and library collections.

We are seeking to appoint two independent members to our Collections Committee, for a period of up to 4 years.

The Group is Seeking Two Candidates

  • One with significant experience in the management of historic collections in museums or heritage sites
  • One with significant experience in the digital humanities.

In addition, both should ideally have:

  • An understanding of current risks, trends and opportunities in the museum and/or archives sector
  • Experience of online audiences, digital access and digital preservation
  • Experience in assessing and managing of risks and opportunities in major projects and programmes.
  • Experience in offering strategic advice to management.
  • Experience in prioritising activities and projects to align with strategic activities and priorities

Desirable

  • Experience of museum or visitor facing programmes
  • Experience of Executive Leadership

Responsibilities

At meetings the Committee will:

  • Give advice on collection strategies and how these support the fulfilment of SMG's strategic objectives
  • Ensure that all collections work is research-informed and aspires to the highest international museums standards in collections management
  • Advise on the initiation of new collections projects
  • Consider the progress of major projects, providing expert advice and guidance
  • Review and approve collections-related policies
  • Approve acquisitions and transfers within the Committee's authority
  • Promote sustainable management of the collections
