Music Librarian (Permanent)
Salary: £33,500 per annum Hours: 35 hours per week Location: London Coliseum & other locations as required
About the Role
We’re seeking a highly organised and detail-focused Music Librarian to support the delivery of high-quality opera productions. This role ensures the accurate preparation, management, and distribution of vocal and orchestral materials, along with contributing to the creation and delivery of surtitles for live performances.
Working closely with the Music Library & Surtitles Manager, this role spans both administrative and technical functions within the music library. The postholder is integral to maintaining high standards, requiring a blend of precision, strong organisational skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced collaborative environment.
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of our music department, directly supporting rehearsals and performances while assisting artists, musicians, and production teams.
Key Responsibilities

Music administration:
- Prepare, organise, and distribute vocal and orchestral scores
- Ensure accurate and timely delivery of music materials for productions

Surtitles team support:
- Assist in creating and finalising surtitles for English, French, and German
- Contribute to copy-editing and proofreading for live performance presentation

Operational duties:
- Collaboration with directors, conductors, and singers to facilitate smooth rehearsals and performances
- Maintenance of music library records and systems to support future productions

- Technical & administrative:
- Proficient use of Sibelius engraving software for music printing and editing
- Management of music digital and physical files with meticulous attention to detail
Requirements

Education:
- Music degree or equivalent professional operatic/performance experience

Skills & experience:
- Demonstrated accuracy and neatness in music and word-copying skills
- Knowledge of singers’ and orchestral players’ requirements, gained through practical experience
- Proficient use of Microsoft 365, including word processing, emails, and digital file management
- BSTP (British Standard for Typing Papers)/High volume neat handwriting for music notation or corrections

Technical skills:
- Fluent in Sibelius engraving software for scoring and music engraving
- Comfortable with graphics-editing software for surtitles and stage presentation text

Soft skills & attributes:
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Excellent time management to meet tight deadlines in a dynamic work environment
- Ability to work independently or as part of a small team with a proactive, initiative-driven mindset

Physical requirements & flexibility:
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required
- Ability to safely lift and move boxes of scores (up to 15 kg)

- Language & cultural context:
- CEFR C2 level English proficiency (written and spoken)
- Understanding of opera and experience in its production or culture would be advantageous
