About The Role

National Beaver Site Survey - Postdoctoral Research Associate INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY

This part time (0.4 FTE) post is offered as a fixed term contract and is funded by NERC from 01/04/2027 until 30/09/2028.

Salary will be from £34,610 (per annum pro rata) on Grade E subject to knowledge, skills and experience.

The Role

Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work alongside PI Naomi Gatis and Co-Is Alan Puttock, Diego Panici and Richard Brazier. This role will contribute to a NERC funded project entitled Return of the beaver: adapting and mitigating climate-induced hydrological extremes building on a suite of novel and impactful beaver researcher already undertaken at the University of Exeter. The successful applicant will undertake a systematic survey of beaver wetlands across England, Scotland and Wales including:

  • Quantify surface water extent via aerial drone survey
  • Quantify pond depth by bathymetric sonar survey on a GNSS-equipped surface water drone
  • Work with Project Partners to collect and collate site descriptors e.g. site occupancy and dam age
  • Use GIS (QGIS, ArcGIS or equivalent) to analyse spatial datasets to extract site descriptors e.g. catchment area, geology, land-use
  • Probe sediment depths within ponds
  • Collect sediment cores from within ponds

About You

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be self-motivated, independent worker with experience of Project Partner working and a knowledge and understanding of how beavers can alter carbon cycling in UK rivers.
