National Route Planner
National Route Planner Location: Bedford, MK44 3JZ Salary: £33,925.00 per annum Hours: Full-time, office-based (08:30 - 17:30)
About the Role
We are recruiting for a National Route Planner to join our transport team as part of our operations in Bedford. This key role is all about ensuring our fleet’s routes—covering all collections, deliveries, and returns for the national fleet of transporters and sub-contractors—are efficient, cost-effective, and of the highest service quality.
Your primary responsibility will be to maintain and improve routing performance to achieve maximum fleet productivity while:
- Continually reviewing and optimising daily schedules
- Meeting or exceeding all customer SLAs (Service Level Agreements)
- Collaborating with teams across the business for seamless operations
Key Responsibilities

Route Optimisation:
- Use PTV Route Optimiser systematically for daily route planning and scheduling.
- Apply routine maintenance and optimisation of routing software settings.

Performance Analysis & Reporting:
- Generate detailed daily/weekly reports on collection, delivery, fleet performance, and productivity.
- Analysing metrics to identify areas for cost reduction and operational improvements.

KPI & Compliance:
- Ensure targets for MPM (Moves Per Man) and fleet productivity are surpassed.
- Monitor and achieve internal KPI targets to optimise efficiency.

Stakeholder Engagement:
- Engage with subcontractors and yards, ensuring they meet agreed performance standards.
- Work closely with internal teams (logistics, operations) to maintain flow and transparency.

- Cost & Efficiency Tracking:
- Produce monthly reports outlining costs, USP, sub-haul efficiency, and driver costs.
- Contribute to reducing unnecessary costs while safeguarding delivery quality.
Essential Requirements

Technical Proficiency:
- Previous route planning experience, including route optimisation software (ideally PTV or similar).
- Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel (e.g., reporting, data analysis) and broader MS Office suite.

Analytical & Operational Skills:
- Ability to analyse costs, productivity metrics, and performance trends.
- Demonstrated experience in working to / exceeding KPIs with measurable improvements.
- Proactive problem-solving to devise and implement efficiency-enhancing strategies.

Industry-Specific Knowledge:
- Good geographical awareness of UK landscapes, logistics pinch points, fuel routes, etc.
- Ability to assess route complexity and potential road constraints.
- Comfort in working with exact location addresses and adopting geospatial logic.

Collaborative & Team-Oriented:
- Team player who can communicate effectively across departments and with third parties.
- Attention to detail to ensure accurate, timeless operations and no missed collection/delivery deadlines.
Desirable (But Not Essential)
- Experience in the vehicle recovery/fleet industry (particularly with transpots, auctions, or large-volume shipments).
- Experience using PTV in a multi-site/high-volume setting.
- Proven ability to interpret OMS system workflows and workarounds.
