Senior General Practitioner – National Safeguarding GP
Location: Nationwide (Primarily based in Public Health Wales) Contract Type: Full-time, permanent (Flexible working arrangements welcome) Employer: Public Health Wales
About the Role
An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated General Practitioner to step into a strategic national leadership role within the National Safeguarding Service (NSS) in Public Health Wales.
This is a key position working across NHS Wales and partner agencies to enhance safeguarding practice, influence policy, and drive quality improvement in primary care. The holder will play a pivotal role in shaping Wales’ safeguarding agenda and providing expert advice at the highest leadership levels.
About the National Safeguarding Service
The National Safeguarding Service (NSS) is a dedicated national team dedicated to improving:
- Safeguarding leadership
- Inter-agency collaboration
- Positive safeguarding outcomes across NHS Wales
Together with your colleagues, you will:
- Foster innovation in safeguarding practice
- Influence national policy for safeguarding improvements
- Support system-wide enhancements in primary care and multi-agency working
About the NQIG Directorate
The NQIG Directorate comprises three core divisions:
- Nursing and Quality
- Integrated Governance
- National Safeguarding Service
Their united mission is to strengthen public health in Wales by empowering individuals and organisations, driving better outcomes for:

Key Responsibilities
As the National Safeguarding GP, your role will focus on the following critical areas:
1. Strategic Leadership & Policy Advice
- Provide professional and system leadership for safeguarding across primary care in NHS Wales.
- Advise Welsh Government, Health Boards, and senior clinicians on:
- Safeguarding policy
- Legislation updates
- Best practice frameworks
2. Policy Development & Delivery
- Lead and support the via an agreed workplan:
- Development of national safeguarding policies & guidance tailored to primary care.
- Design and execution of improvement programmes to strengthen safeguarding responses.
3. Collaboration & Network Coordination
- Serve as the key link between:
- Primary care services
- National Safeguarding Service
- NHS Wales Safeguarding Network
- Multi-agency partners (e.g., local authorities, social care teams, voluntary organisations)
4. Quality Improvement & Learning
- Contribute to system-wide safeguarding improvements by:
- Influencing quality assuarance frameworks
- Embedding lessons learned from safeguarding reviews
5. Data Analysis & Executive Reporting
- Analyse and present complex safeguarding data at a high level, including:
- Reports to national Board meetings
- Strategic policy discussions
