Natural Capital or Environmental Economist – Stantec UK
The Opportunity
Stantec UK provides advisory services in sustainability, including:
- Net zero carbon management
- Climate change resilience

We seek a Natural Capital or Environmental Economist to join us, with flexibility on location and opportunities to work across multiple UK sectors. This role offers the chance to drive growth within an ambitious team, boasting strong career progression possibilities.
Primarily involved in the water sector, this position provides an outstanding chance to take a central role in delivering high-quality economic support services to clients. You’ll contribute to projects spanning:
- Energy
- Community development
- Transport
Your expertise will allow you to provide specialist economic and multi-capitals input across:
- Sustainability
- Regulation
- Carbon management
- Life cycle analysis
- Climate change
- Natural and social benefits
- Resilience
You’ll collaborate in interdisciplinary project teams, manage your workload, contribute to high-quality deliverables, support proposals, and participate in external events (e.g. conferences) while developing technical papers.
Specific Areas of Work
- Natural capital accounting and six capitals approaches
- Ecosystem services valuation
- Economic inputs into ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance)
- Social Value Measurement and Wellbeing Valuation
- Green finance & market creation for nature-based solutions

About You
Qualifications & Experience
- A relevant first or postgraduate degree in environmental economics or a closely related field.
- A higher degree (e.g. Master’s) would be advantageous.
- Water sector experience (not compulsory, but valued).
- Strong knowledge of UK and international environmental legislation.
Key Responsibilities & Skills
- Adaptability & flexibility: Ability to grasp client needs, offer creative, pragmatic advice within budgets and timelines.
- Collaborative mindset: Work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, fostering relationships with clients and stakeholders.
- Technical expertise: Lead multi-disciplinary projects, manage contracts, and drive innovation through digital solutions.
- Regulatory & legislative understanding: Fluency in sustainable infrastructure challenges and environmental, social, and economic governance.
- Cost-benefit assessment & natural capital accounting: Proven ability in these areas.
- Commercial acumen: Contribute to proposals, develop strategic solutions, and manage climate change risk assessments.
- Client relationship development: Build long-term partnerships and cultivate a professional external profile.
