Job Summary
This role within the UK Naval Authority is hosted by the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), which is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. The Naval Authority & technology group certifies all RN surface warships and submarines, as well as small-boats, autonomous and novel craft. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, from ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent (CASD), to delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in defence. At least one of four nuclear-armed submarines, supported by smaller attack submarines, is on patrol at all times: of every hour of every day. The UK surface fleet protects our nation, international trade on the high seas, UK dependencies, and interests wherever and whenever our government requires.

Hybrid and flexible working can be considered for this post. Successful candidates are encouraged to discuss options with the recruiting line manager before starting the role.
Job Description
Are you an Engineer inspired to work on sophisticated, cutting-edge maritime surface platforms? If so, we have an incredible opportunity for you to join our Naval Authority Technology Group (NATG). Here, you’ll work at the forefront of engineering, science, and technology to solve unique technical challenges and contribute significantly to key defence platforms by collaborating with experts across defence.
In this role, you’ll act as the Naval Authority Reviewing Officer for the Propulsion & Manoeuvring Systems Naval Authority area. You’ll assist in carrying out audits of the Platform Authority for certification. You will be empowered to make recommendations as the Naval Authority Certifying Officer for approval and issue of Key hazard area PMS certificates. You will provide the Platform Authority with advice on strategies, assumptions and certification submissions, including the introduction of new vessels entering service such as the new Type 26 Frigate.
We are looking for someone who will positively engage with the Platform Authority and Maritime Capability, Trials and Assessment team to monitor and actively promote the clearance of mandatory requirements, conditions of certification and memorandum items recorded on the PMS certificates. You will need to lead your direct report and task industry engineers, accepting and approving their output.
The role also offers an exciting opportunity to assist in the development and maintenance of Naval Authority Area policy and procedures, including the application of the DSA03-DMR Naval Authority Rules for the Certification of MoD Shipping, Naval Ship Code and Class Society Rules, which may include participation at MoD, National or International-wide committees.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
