Together, we uphold centuries of naval tradition while driving innovation that ensures the Royal Navy’s readiness to protect our nation and secure our future.

As part of this, Director Finance and Commercial is the Royal Navy’s lead for financial and commercial strategy. The directorate provides the analytical insight, assurance, and oversight needed to ensure resources achieve the greatest operational effect. It is a hub of leadership, coordination, and expertise at the heart of naval command.

About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Navy Command Finance team as an Assistant Finance Business Partner, supporting a high-profile portfolio delivering critical digital and IT capabilities across the Royal Navy.

Working closely with stakeholders, project teams, and finance colleagues, you will provide high-quality financial insight to support effective stewardship of public funds and enable informed decision-making.

You will play a key role in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting across a complex and evolving portfolio. The role requires strong analytical skills, sound judgement, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance audiences.

Operating in a fast-paced and collaborative environment, you will support robust financial management, strengthen financial controls, and contribute to continuous improvement of financial processes.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop their finance business partnering skills, gain exposure to senior stakeholders, and contribute directly to the delivery of operational capability across the Royal Navy.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

The successful candidate will support the Finance Business Partner in delivering effective financial management across Navy Digital. This will include producing and maintaining accurate budgets and forecasts, monitoring in-year performance, and identifying financial risks and opportunities.

You will analyse and interpret financial data to provide clear, actionable insight to stakeholders, supporting decision-making at both project and programme level. The role requires working closely with delivery teams to understand cost drivers, challenge assumptions, and ensure financial plans are realistic and aligned to business priorities.

You will support month-end and year-end activities, ensuring accuracy of financial reporting and compliance with MOD and government finance policies.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
