Navy Command - Cyber Assurance Coordinator

Cyber Assurance Lead – Royal Navy In-Service Submarines Navy Command HQ, Nuclear Submarine Directorate • HMNB Portsmouth • PO2 8BY • 37 hours/week


About the Role

At Navy Command, we lead, support, and sustain the ** Royal Navy**, ensuring the Submarine Flotilla remains ready to protect national security. This role is based at HMNB Portsmouth, one of the busiest naval bases in the world, alongside world-leading platforms and advanced operations.

As the Cyber Assurance Lead for Royal Navy In-Service Submarines, you will:

  • Oversee cyber security, policy implementation, and risk management.
  • Drive the implementation of Secure by Design (SbD) activities.
  • Manage the Submarine Critical Assets Register (CAR).
  • Provide data-driven analysis to support decision-making.
  • Ensure full compliance with Defence cyber policy, standards, and assurance frameworks.

This critical appointment ensures that UK submarine capability remains protected and compliant with evolving cyber threats.


Key Responsibilities

Cyber Security & Risk Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for Cyber Assurance across the Submarine Flotilla.
  • Directly advise senior stakeholders on cyber security, policy, and risk management strategies.
  • Review and assure the quality of Secure by Design (SbD) casework submitted to NCHQ.
  • Develop and maintain the Submarine Critical Assets Register (CAR) to facilitate vulnerability identification and assessment.

Risk Assessment & Decision Support

  • Employ data-driven techniques to analyse Information Assurance and Cyber risks across submarine platforms.
  • Identify trends, assess risk exposures, and propose mitigation solutions.
  • Present credible cyber risk assessments to senior management, influencing operational and strategic decisions.

Collaboration & Accountability

  • Work closely with Platform Authorities and Equipment Authorities to enhance cyber policy and technical deployment.
  • Oversee the rolling Cyber Capability Development Plan to align with Defence’s digital transformation objectives.
  • Engage with project management teams in cyber transformation initiatives.
  • Support risk governance processes in conjunction with RAIDO to integrate cyber risks into wider MOD programmes.

Person Specifications & Behaviours

Required Experience

  • Broad understanding of cyber frameworks, risk management, or regulatory environments.
  • Proven experience in high-assurance environments (e.g. defence, critical infrastructure, or classified systems).
  • Engineering/digital systems expertise, including large-scale platforms.

Salary & Benefits

Remuneration & Pension

  • Salary: £30,740 basic.
  • MOE-funded Civil Service pension contribution: £8,905 additional.

Working Flexibility

  • Up to 5 days per week working from home (hybrid), while maintaining 60% in-office attendance (as available).
  • Support for working relatives/long commutes (detailed requests handled via NavCommand).

Security Requirements

Vetting

  • Security Check (SC) level clearance is a mandatory acuerdo.
  • After selection, successful candidates undergo criminal record checks and must meet BPSS baseline requirements.
  • All personnel handling classified patrols or data access pathways will need SSIMO or above (dependent on role duties).

Confidentiality

  • outing is restricted while serving MOD (7-year minimum stay mandatory).

Other Contractual Requirements

  • Not for relocation, childcare, or voyage pay consideration.
  • Visa sponsorship unavailable; open to UK Nationals only.

Selection Process
