Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join Navy Command’s Finance function at the heart of Defence decision making. As a Finance Desk Officer, you will play a vital role in the financial planning, monitoring and governance of Royal Navy programmes.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary delivery team, you will help ensure that financial data, forecasts and business cases are accurate, compliant and aligned with departmental priorities. You will also support regular financial reporting cycles, variance analysis and the collation of data for assurance reviews.
This role involves close collaboration with finance business partners, commercial teams and other enabling functions across defence. You’ll gain valuable exposure to MOD systems, processes and governance while developing a strong foundation in public sector finance.

Job Description
The Finance Officer is an integral part of the Navy Command (NC) Central Finance Team and is responsible for supporting the Finance Business Partner (FBP) in the effective financial management of the business areas. FBPs are a critical role which puts finance at the heart of decision making, with responsibility for building and sustaining a fruitful partnership between finance and the business.
You will be fully trained and supported to develop as there are many opportunities to progress both within the Department and across the wider Civil Service.
You will gain knowledge and experience so that you are proficient in all aspects of Financial Management and provide robust and timely monthly accounts for consolidation, variance analysis, assessment of risks and opportunities.
The Finance Officer role aids in the management of decision making, provides the Budget Holder with financial advice on matters affecting their business areas both in the current year and across the longer term financial outlook.

Person specification
Once trained, you will be responsible for supporting effective financial management within Navy. Providing advice and guidance to stakeholders regarding effective management of the Budget and monitoring and recording financial risks and opportunities.
Providing support to the business area throughout the 10-year planning cycle, which can include creation, progression and scrutiny of plans.
To undertake financial scrutiny, review and financial approval of business cases ensuring propriety, regularity, value for money and affordability under the mentorship of your management.

An apprenticeship is a combined package of work and training. Through an apprenticeship you will gain professional knowledge, practical experience, and the broader skills required to upskill you in your current role and pave the way for your future career. Most of the training will be ‘on-the-job’, with the remaining ‘off-the-job’ training often delivered by a training provider. This means minimal disruption and maximum impact.
Professional qualifications can be achieved through an apprenticeship and range from Level 2 (equivalent to 5 GCSEs), Level 3 (equivalent to 2 A Levels), and Levels 4 -6.
Apprenticeships normally last between 12 months - 3 years, depending on the level of the apprenticeship.
Anyone can undertake an Apprenticeship and everyone, regardless of age, can benefit from developing their skills in an accredited way.Successful candidates can discuss their development options with their manager when in post.

Required
Candidates that reach the minimum required pass mark will have their results saved as a banked score against the following tests:
- New Civil Service Verbal Test
- New Civil Service Numerical Test
When a candidate has a banked score, they’re not asked to re-take the same test providing it is set at the same level. Scores will be banked for a 6-month period from the date of test completion. If a candidate is invited to take the same test against multiple vacancies, the banked score will be recognised against all vacancies and all active applications will progress.
