Job Summary
Are you looking for a change that is stimulating and rewarding? The Nuclear Department within Navy Command, has a key role in providing education and training ranging from introductory to postgraduate level to Service and MOD Civilian personnel, in support of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme as well as bespoke courses for the wider nuclear industry.
Our multidisciplinary team consists of specialists in materials, physics, chemistry, thermal hydraulics, and nuclear safety related to nuclear power applications.
This post is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job Description
You will play a key role in educating and training personnel involved in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme.
Key Responsibilities:

Design, Develop, Deliver, and Evaluate Training and Education Programmes up to Master's Level in Nuclear Reactor Plant Materials, covering topics such as:
- Metallurgy and behaviour of materials used within nuclear reactor plant systems.
- Principles, methodologies, and practical application of metallurgical testing, mechanical testing, and materials characterisation.
- Computational modelling and simulation of reactor plant materials using industry-standard software and tools.
- Nuclear, mechanical, and chemical performance requirements of reactor materials, and the operational constraints arising from these requirements.

Contribute to teaching and training in at least one of the following reactor engineering disciplines, with training and development provided as required:
- Thermal Hydraulics
- Corrosion Science and Engineering
- Reactor Chemistry
- Reactor Dynamics

Design, supervise, and assess student projects.

Undertake Course Manager duties.

Maintain, develop, and manage codes and software.

Operate and manage specialist equipment.

Attend working groups and represent the department at conferences and working groups.

Ensure continued professional development in the area of specialist knowledge.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
- A postgraduate Qualification (Level 7) in a STEM subject.
Desirable Criteria:
- PhD (Level 8) in a STEM Subject.
- Proven experience in a nuclear academic, industrial, or research environment.
- A formal certified teaching qualification is required for this post. If not already in possession of a teaching qualification, applicants must undertake a course of study to be completed within 12 months of commencing the job.
- Ability to deliver clear, engaging, and structured lectures collaborating effectively in cross-disciplinary teams.

- A postgraduate Qualification (Level 7) in a STEM subject.

The faculty strongly supports continuing professional development and therefore upon taking up the position, you will have the opportunity to undertake a range of courses, attend conferences, and build collaborations with industry and academia. If you have not already acquired professional registration, then you will also be supported in working towards Chartered status with a relevant scientific or engineering professional body. It is anticipated that any research undertaken which is not security classified may be suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals or at conferences.

Location
The department is in HMS Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire, which is the primary engineering training establishment for the Royal Navy. HMS Sultan's on-site facilities include secure parking, gymnasium, Wardroom membership, and an onsite shop. Stokes Bay beach is close by and Gosport is a short ferry ride to Portsmouth, which offers excellent facilities such as access to travel networks, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, and Gunwharf Quays outlet shopping.
Pay and Allowances
This post is on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). This is a discretionary allowance. The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA. The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy.
Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance. Applicants can request further information regarding how this and other flexible working arrangements may work in their team from the Vacancy Holder (see advert for contact details). The post does not offer relocation expenses. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.

Selection Process Details

Applicants invited to interview will need to demonstrate their technical expertise and must give a ten-minute presentation.
The presentation should be technical and in an area of materials science.
