Job Summary
Are you looking for a change that is stimulating and rewarding? The Nuclear Department within Navy Command, has a key role in providing education and training ranging from introductory to postgraduate level to Service and MOD Civilian personnel, in support of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme as well as bespoke courses for the wider nuclear industry.
Our multidisciplinary team consists of specialists in materials, physics, chemistry, thermal hydraulics, and nuclear safety related to nuclear power applications.
This post is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job Description
You will play a key role in educating and training personnel involved in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme.
You Will Deliver
- Lectures, Tutorials, And Research Project Supervision Up To Level 7 (Master's Level), And Design, Develop, Deliver, And Assess Courses Covering:
- Nuclear and radiation physics, including the underlying principles, concepts, procedures, and interrelationships of reactor physics, radiation detection and instrumentation, radiation shielding, and nuclear criticality safety.
- Radiation detection systems, dosimetry, and instrument calibration.
- Nuclear criticality safety and reactor shielding design.
- Computational modelling and analysis of reactor shielding and criticality assessments using industry-standard software tools.
- The application of scientific judgement and physical insight to solve complex criticality, shielding, and radiation detection challenges.
- Mathematical analysis of advanced problems in criticality safety, radiation shielding, and radiation detection.
- Develop and lead theoretical and experimental research activities in the fields of criticality safety, radiation detection, and radiation shielding.
You Will Also:
- Design, supervise and assess student projects
- Undertake Course Manager duties
- Maintain, develop, and manage codes and software
- Operate and manage specialist equipment
- Attend working groups and represent the department at conferences and working groups
- Ensure continued professional development in area of specialist knowledge
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
- A postgraduate Qualification (Level 7) in a STEM subject.
Desirable Criteria:
- PHD (Level 8) in a STEM Subject
- Proven experience in a nuclear academic, industrial or research environment
- A formal certified teaching qualification is required for this post. If not already in possession of a teaching qualification, applicants must undertake a course of study to be completed within 12 months of commencing the job
- Ability to deliver clear engaging and structured lectures collaborating effectively in cross-disciplinary teams
Qualifications
- A postgraduate Qualification (Level 7) in a STEM subject.

The faculty strongly supports continuing professional development and therefore upon taking up the position, you will have the opportunity to undertake a range of courses, attend conferences and build collaborations with industry and academia. If you have not already acquired professional registration, then you will also be supported in working towards Chartered status with a relevant scientific or engineering professional body. It is anticipated that any research undertaken which is not security classified may be suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals or at conferences.

The department is in HMS Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire which is the primary engineering training establishment for the Royal Navy. HMS Sultan's on-site facilities include secure parking, gymnasium, Wardroom membership and an onsite shop. Stokes Bay beach is close by and Gosport is a short ferry ride to Portsmouth, which offers excellent facilities such as access to travel networks, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays outlet shopping.
This post is on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). This is a discretionary allowance. The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA. The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy.
Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.

Applicants invited to interview will need to demonstrate their technical expertise and must give a ten-minute presentation.
The presentation should be technical and in an area of criticality safety assessment or radiation detection.
