Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and compassionate nurse to join our Neonatal Team as an Outreach Sister / Charge Nurse. This is an exciting opportunity within a dynamic service, supporting the delivery of high-quality care for babies and their families both within the unit and through our neonatal outreach service.

As an experienced member of the neonatal team, you will help ensure the delivery of exceptional nursing care through the effective management of junior staff, resources, and clinical standards. You will act as a role model for nursing excellence and support the development of both qualified and unqualified staff.

Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, you will coordinate all aspects of care at home and in hospital to ensure the best possible outcomes for babies and their families.

Main Duties of the Job

Main Duties

  • Ensure the delivery and maintenance of high standards of neonatal nursing care.
  • Provide effective clinical leadership and act as a positive role model for the wider team.
  • Coordinate care and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of babies and families.
  • Support, supervise, and develop junior staff and students through teaching, mentoring, and clinical support.
  • Assist with the management of staffing, resources, and ward activity.
  • Deputise for the Ward Manager as required.

Neonatal Outreach Service

A key aspect of this role includes supporting our Neonatal Outreach Service, helping babies transition safely from hospital to home. Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting timely and safe discharge planning.
  • Providing nasogastric tube feeding training for parents and carers.
  • Offering nutritional and feeding advice.
  • Supporting babies requiring home oxygen therapy.
  • Monitoring growth and weight following discharge.
  • Supporting families caring for babies experiencing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.
  • Facilitating and monitoring home phototherapy programmes.

  • Establish and maintain communication with people about routine and daily activities, overcoming any differences in communication between the people involved.
  • The outreach role specifically involves working closely with the patients consultant, health visitor, social worker, and any other professional involved in the care of the patient and/or family, identifying/reporting any concerns.
  • Assess, develop, implement, and evaluate programme of care. To actively participate in team nursing and the development of nursing responsibilities for individual patients. To be responsible for the organisation of nursing care within the clinic.
  • To discuss with the Matron regarding development and changes both nursing and medical, which affect patients directly and indirectly.
  • Assess the health and wellbeing needs of people whose needs are relatively stable and consistent with others in the caseload.
  • Plan, deliver, and evaluate programmes to address peoples health and wellbeing needs which are relatively stable and consistent with others in the caseload.
  • To take appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients, including the delegation of patient care to nurses with the appropriate level of skill at all times. To report any accidents/incidents to the Matron.
  • To actively participate in the nursing process in the best interest of the patient.
  • To ensure that acceptable standards of patient care are maintained and, where necessary, instigate changes in agreement with Matron.
  • Lead others in the development of knowledge, ideas, and work practice.

Staff Development

  • Develop own knowledge and skills and contribute to the development of others.
  • Supervise the training of qualified and unqualified staff in accordance to their level of competence, and assist junior staff to develop clinical and managerial skills.
  • To Act as a mentor for junior staff, to participate in teaching for all learners in accordance with their objectives, working closely with the Clinical Facilitators. To provide support and supervision of learner nurses. To participate in teaching programmes.
  • Maintain a wide knowledge of current practice and issues within the speciality by reading relevant journals and attending study days where appropriate. Promoting the implementation and teaching of research-based practice.
  • To attend mandatory training days.
  • To organise and provide training programmes in accordance with the identified needs for the department.

Clinical Governance

  • Promote best practice in health, safety, and security.
  • Contribute to quality improvement.
  • Promote peoples equality, diversity, and rights.
  • Participate in personal and departmental clinical audit.
  • To ensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the policies of the Trust.
  • To contribute to the control of infection by monitoring and reporting any housekeeping issues and maintaining rotas for regular cleaning of nursing/patient equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining own and others health safety and security.

Management

  • Promote effective communication with ward/departmental staff and multidisciplinary teams.

  • To prepare the duty rota for staff within the ward establishment. To provide effective and well-balanced staff cover to meet the requirements of the service and to ensure the presence of a suitably qualified and experienced nurse at all times.

Qualifications

  • RSCN/RN (Child)/RN/RM.
  • QIS or equivalent with a minimum of 2 years experience.

Desirable

  • Demonstrate evidence of working towards further education e.g., Degree in related topics.

Experience

  • Extensive neonatal nursing experience with a minimum of 4 years at Band 5 or above.

Specialist Knowledge

  • Experience of planning discharge needs of neonates to within the community setting.
  • Understanding of child protection.
  • Up to date knowledge of issues affecting neonates and neonatal nursing.
  • Understanding of professional development.
  • Understanding of clinical governance responsibilities.
