About the Opportunity
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers an exciting 12-month secondment opportunity within its Neonatal Surgical Team for an internal applicant only.
This role provides a motivated neonatal nurse with the chance to advance their specialist expertise, leadership skills, and clinical knowledge in a tertiary neonatal unit.
The successful applicant will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to deliver expert nursing care, ensuring outstanding, family-centred support for surgical neonates and their families.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide advanced nursing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation for neonates with surgical conditions.
- Work autonomously, including conducting surgical ward rounds or clinics independently.
- Utilise advanced clinical and analytical skills to manage complex caseloads.
- Facilitate seamless transitions from neonatal to paediatric surgical services.
- Offer emotional support and clear communication to families during high-stress periods.
- Guide parents through surgical procedures, recovery, and home-care needs.
- Contribute to staff education, service development, and continuous care improvement.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential Criteria
- Registered nurse on the NMC register (relevant category).
- Degree qualification, 120 credits at Level 6 (L6), or equivalent specialist training/experience through portfolio/assessment.
- Significant post-registration experience/qualification/training in a neonatal/specialist field.
- Completion of all Band 5 preceptorship competencies.
- Higher Education Institute-approved course in supporting learners in practice, or equivalent documented experience, including:
- Support for a range of learners in practice.
- Leadership in promoting effective learning in practice among colleagues.
- Extensive post-registration experience within a specialist neonatal area.
- Knowledge of current acute healthcare issues.
- Personal accountability for clinical practice.
